I'm not sure if you realize it or not, but the rocker panels in a convertible are much thicker than the rocker panels on a hardtop body. Also, the rear quarter wheelhouses are about twice as thick as regular wheelhouses and the inner quarter panels are much beefier as well. The windshield pillars and header are very intricate pieces and will have to be modified extensively. While the two bodies may look very similar, in actuality they are very different.
This means that the car has to be supported structurally by means of a very strong subframe connector system. I don't think that a regular subframe connector will eliminate the twist and flex that comes with a roofless car. There are also door jamb guides that help eliminate the body flex in the door area on a convertible. Without the correct support, you will end up with a car that will fold in the middle. You really should get in touch with the guys that are already doing the convertible conversions before you end up with a useless shell. They may be at the nats again this year. Good luck.

most of the 'verts i see dont have doors, i guess this would  help add stength, help conceal  extra bars/rails and some people dont like doorhandles and the like...

just my two cents

What are you cutting up to do this modification?? I had seen on one of the sites last year where someone cut up a RT for the conversion.....Sacreligous in my opinion, as there are many 318 and 6 cylinder cars out there for this type of mod.....Good luck with this, and keep the site updated on your progress.

:dontknow: Why ? Actually from what others have brought to your attention about a project like this...............the money spent to do it right will not be that much less than the money spent on a real convertable, and you will have no worrys about structure and sheetmental integrity. I'd get some professional guidence, but Hotrod 98 has brought some very good points to you attention about this kind of project.

Many people are doing conversions these days. There is a kit that someone put out that cost 10k. They do all the extra strength crap adn what nots. The only down side is  you have to find a donor car for the windshield. Burpin likes the idea of a conversion. burpin plans on doing a conversion in the future. Please post as you go along. Burpin will look for the company that does the kit. Also please talk to others that have done this.

Two years ago the company that makes the "conversion" kit had  a barracuda half-done on display.  Looked like a neat and very complete product they make but you couldnt play with it any.  I wanted to see the top go up and down, seal up, latch etc but as it was only part done I wasnt allowed to tinker.  I imagine the gusseting of the subframe on the unibody would have to be substantial to make up for the design difference between a real vert and a coupe "body".
