Good question.  Maybe the reason at the Mopar meet the car wasnt done is because they didnt want to show a "finished" project but rather the parts someone would buy to complete their own?

Have you ever seen in person a car that was finished and on the road?  I would be leery of cutting any car unless I had seen in person one that was finished.  You know how it is, there are always a number of things someone has to do to finish a custom project that dont get mentioned in any literature.

My chal convert is a fairly low mileage car and still lacked a little in the structural integrity department. I added heavy subframe connectors as a precaution since the hemi weighs almost 800 lbs. I think that it is safe to assume that you will have structural problems unless you have someone build a total subframe style undercarriage. You could start with one of the new front aftermarket subframes and go from there.
I cut up a 71 chal convert shell a few years ago (wrecked and rusted badly) and I was amazed at how thick some of the components were on that car. I thought I would never get that rocker cut all of the way through.  My gut feeling on this project is that if the roof is bad, find a replacement and change it.
I have a 66 coronet 500 convertible that runs and drives that I will take $5000 for. It has power steering, power brakes, power windows, a/c, buckets, console, factory console tach. The right quarter has some bondo, the right lower fender area is rusted (repairable) and there's rust in the back floor board area, but overall, would make a nice resto. It's not a rust bucket. The frame and cowls are solid. The trunk only has one small area of rust...easy repair. The only rust repair panels that it would need is the back floor pans, maybe. Was a 361 but now has a 400 auto. You could drive this car while you restore it. There's a new convertible top in the trunk. Oh yeah, and the power top still works great. Like I said an easy resto. I just don't have time to restore them all.   Clear Texas title. If anyone's interested, I'll post some pics.

I think the liability of selling a converted convertible might keep them from doing it.  Everyone that says verts are built different is correct.  And I would probably NEVER trust a conversion convertible.   Selling repoped convertible parts is a good way to make some $$$, but the only real kit I've ever seen was a a guy in Washington state (5 years ago) who had everything cut off from a wreck, plus some new parts. I should have spent that $1800 then. :nopity:

The liability of creating a car that would hold together and not crack in the middle is certainly something to think about.  I would think that someone who properly installed weded subframe connectors with crossbracing could do it without too much difficult.  As long as the original unibody wasnt relied on for structural rigidity but only to hold the sheetmetal together I would think it would be safe.  However, I would still like to see on that has already been done and talk to the guy who owns it to see how the experience has been.

The problem that Im running into is the fact that I want a convert and always have even before the prices got insane!  I found numerous affordable shells about four years ago but lacked the funds, now that Im better off $$$ I cant find one that is affordable.  I guess its the never ending spiral that most people go through.  Just concidering an affordable alternitive.  Who knows maybe I will find one that is in my $$$ range.

The cheapest Cuda/Barracuda convertible I know of right now is on Cudaworld.com and is $35,000 right now.  Not a bad price for the way the  car looks but then that is subjective I guess.  EBody converts always seem to be "just out of reach" evertime I look at them.  No matter how much I save or decide to sell a car or two to buy one they seem to just leap out of the already high price they are in and hit a new high.  And forget a BigBlock one, unless its rusted through enough to weigh half what it came from new at the factory they are just simply out-of-sight pricewise.

It will be interesting to say the least to see how this convertible conversion works out, I could see it becoming more common (still keeping perspecitve, common IS relative) in the future as the "real" convertibles keep accelerating upwards in price.

I found mine less than two years ago, converted to a 440+6 already.  It appeared in three mags, cover of two.  THey are still out there.  It was cheaper than the one mentioned above.  It'll still be cheaper to fix up a rough factory convertible than to build one(IMHO).

I saw a project Cuda vert at Carlisle that had a $30,000 price on the window.  I didn't see it up close, so I'm not really sure how bad it waas.  Maybe some other people who went to carlisle saw it. There is a Chally vert major project car on ebay now.  $5600 with 3 days left.
