righty tighty lefty not so good
« on: April 03, 2019 - 10:08:54 PM »
Good day all. New guy here.
I have recently acquired a 70 RTSE and have a steering issue. As the title suggests, it steers very tight to the right but not nearly as far to the left. I have removed the steering wheel and confirmed the splines are correctly located. The pitman appears to be located correctly. Center link looks ok. joints are all new. The box is power steer. Sooooo, is it possible for the coupler to be incorrectly splined as the manual also indicates it has a master spline?

Or is it more likely I have an incorrect pitman arm? I noticed the grease fitting was removed to allow clearance past the torsion bar. 3.5 turns lock to lock but I can only get a little better than 3 and a bit as the tire hits the frame on the passenger side. Steering wheel is centered as it appears the pitman and idler arm are  when straight.

Anyone experience this, or have a suggested path to diagnose? Appreciate the help thank you.
mike

It sounds to be that you either have a very incorrectly clocked pitman arm/steering system or you potentially have the wrong pitman arm. Something is definitely off there.

I agree that the pitman arm is probably not kosher, but would take off the tie rod ends and see what the swing of the wheels is like in a free condition. For one wheel to touch suggests either suspension or body troubles, with the most likely being suspension. Have a helper hold a tape measure carefully in the middle of one of the wheels and measure to the centre of the other and do that on both sides and compare. They should be very close in measurement and if not, then a bent lower control arm may be the problem. Some things to check and oh yeah, welcome to the site from Ontario,  :canada:
