70 Cuda Pebble Grain Seat Belt Buckle Restoration
« on: May 18, 2019 - 05:41:51 PM »
Does anyone know if the "pebble grain" on top of the buckle is actually in the top black coating material or is it in the metal portion of the buckle?   I have a couple of buckles that have small rust bubbles in them and I'm trying to determine if I can take a wire wheel to them and strip them down to bare metal and the pebble grain still be there or if by removing the top black material the pebble grain will be removed?

That's what I had figured.  I'll give Bill a call.  Maybe he can tell me what to use for the Pebble grain finish.  Thanks for the info!

I just stripped my rear buckles with paint stripper down to bare metal before priming and painting. On mine the grain was in the metal.

Here's a picture for further clarification. Just recently found this one that I'll be painting and using on my car.

Did you use air craft stripper for that job?

I used a hardware store paint stripper. It's called: Circa 1850 heavy body paint & varnish remover. I believe the "heavy body" means that it's a gel rather than liquid. It doesn't contain any methylene chloride either. I left it on overnight then used lacquer thinner to wetten up the stripper because it dried up on the buckle.

thanks.  I've seen the circa in the hardware store but have not used it yet.
I've not noticed it does not have the methylene chloride
I don't use stripper because I don't like the chemical exposure to methylene chloride.

Here's a picture of the can. I thought it might be a Canada only thing because the bottom right says "proudly canadian since 1965".

Also, it looks like methylene chloride is banned in the US, probably Canada too but I can't say for sure.
