clicking wiper switch
« on: June 20, 2019 - 11:35:42 AM »
i just replaced my non working switch with a used mopar one. its variable speed version

the wipers work, but its making a clicking noise with key on and wiper off.

on the connections, there is 1 that is open. the old one didnt have anything plugging into it and i didnt see any loose cable.

any ideas on the clicking noise??

What car is in this in? Its hard to tell in the video, but it sounds like the parking connections are connecting and disconnecting. I do not believe this has anything to do with a wire, however you are saying there is something not connected or there is an "open" connection? Sounds like you have a different motor or perhaps switch than what you put it in.

I'd say we need more pictures and/or information as I for one am not understanding what you have going on.

car us a 70 challenger with rallye gauges, if that matters.. stated as a base 318, its now a 440 rt rebuild car.

it had a variable switch when i bought the car and it worked intermittently.
so i replaced with a remanufactured one.

i need to figure how to take smaller pics, web site wont
accept mine. too large

I believe that unused terminal is for the window washer, you push in on the switch to activate the motor on the washer bottle. I would have to look at the wiring diagram again, but I am pretty sure that is what it is.

I don't think that unused terminal has anything to do with the clicking you are hearing. Disconnect the plug from the wiper motor to the bulk head, then with the key on, test the terminals and see what is getting power. With the switch off, none of them should be, if one of them is, then there is another problem of where is it coming from. For that you need to check the wires back to the switch but I suspect the switch is defective or you are getting power to the wiper motor through some other means such as someone hacked into the wiring for some reason.

As to the clicking itself, it sounds to me like its getting intermittent power (incorrectly as in coming in on a wire it is not supposed to) or power is being introduced to it intermittently via the switch, but if that were the case the wipers would start to move and then stop and perhaps park. It might be possible that the switch or one of the wires is somehow making random slight contact with a power source. In some cases this can happen with the bulk head connector is tore up and/or wired incorrectly or in some cases completely broken up and terminals are actually making contact with one another inside the block (bulk head connector).
