Dash Gauge Charge Indicator
« on: June 30, 2019 - 08:47:38 PM »
I'm upgrading my alternator to a 1 wire system. I know people recommend that you attach the charge indicator wires on the back of the guage directly together for safety reasons. I'm wondering if I could run a heavier wire gauge from the battery directly to the gauge so it would still function. I'm not sure if the gauge can handle the amperage or not.

I don't know the limitations of the gauge per se, but given that it was designed for 60 amps, if you run a 120 on it you will probably have issues (you are talking the amp gauge right?).

Yes I'm talking about the amp gauge. I would like to figure out a way to keep the gauge working. Just hate to bypass it.

Well, I would say that it "might" work ok, but the larger problem here is that if you are pushing more amps you are over stressing an already marginal wiring system. If you were to rewire it with larger modern wire it might work, but look at it this way, you are risking frying the entire wiring system at a minimum, burning the car to the ground worst case just because you don't want to bypass the gauge. I am the same way, if the car has it I want it to work, but when it comes to the amp gauge I made an exception just because of the risk. If I was running a stock or near stock alternator perhaps I would chance it, but with a 120 or larger, I am just willing to. Your car, so its up to you. I'd definitely carry a decent size extinguisher just in case.
