After Market Moldings vs Original
« on: March 31, 2020 - 12:07:43 AM »
The molding on my windshield and rear window are pretty damaged. The windshield and rear window leaked so the previous owner used a lot of RTV to seal it and attach the molding. The edge of the molding that the molding clips mounts to is pretty bent. In addition, the molding on the rear window doesn't lay flat. Is it better to try to repair the original molding or replace it? Is the after market moldings any good?  Thanks

Which is better depends on several things, are you willing to source new/different ones, how damaged the originals are, etc. All things being equal, if you can find a set for a price you are willing to pay, then go that route.

The moldings thenselves look okay from the top. The damage is on the underside where the molding clips on, around the rear window. It looks like someone hit the molding hard because the clips wouldn't engage. In these areas the molding is bent pretty bad. I had heard the after market moldings don't fit that well. Do you have any experience with the after market parts?  I was going to see if I could find a good set of original moldings at the Spring Fling but because of the pandemic it was canceled.   Thanks

So you cannot repair them? I cannot say I have any experience with after market moldings but I don't think I would be afraid to use them. Post some pictures of what you have.

I bought aftermarket door top moldings and they wouldn’t fit or latch to the clips. I ended up buying original moldings and they snapped right in place. Go for original.

Send your original moldings for the windows to MCB restoration. They’ll have them looking like new. And you know they’ll fit.
