Rebuilding a 440 from a salvage yard to install in an automatic 68 Charger with the original 383 2bbl. The first 440 turned out to be cracked. The salvage yard gave me another 440 with a casting 3698830.440.6 date code 6-16-78. Block was bored 0.030” over, deck leveled and balance the crankshaft with the weight of the pistons. Machine shop did a short assemble about 2 years ago. With a more mature 8 and 6 years old running around I am ready to work on the 440 again. The shop gave me 2 harmonic dampers back. 2658457 which is a forged crankshaft damper from 66-71. The second one is stamped 4095087 “use with 440 cast crank only” and after some research is the same as 3830482 which is a cast crankshaft harmonic damper from 76 til the end of production. The forged damper is for internal balance engine and the cast is for external balance engine (weight on torque converter). Not knowing if the 440 crankshaft is a forged or cast but it was balanced should I use the forged crankshaft harmonic damper? The engine and transmission combination for the 383 is internal balanced back in 68. Thank you for any advice you all have.
