Pulling my tti headers off temporarily
« on: April 17, 2021 - 06:23:45 PM »
I am trying to clean up my engine bay for a repaint. I need to pull my headers off and the steering box out as well. I have a 440 motor.
I have removed my torsion bars, but I still can’t get my headers off. What do I need to do to get these things off. I really don’t want to pull my engine, but I am really pulling my hair on this one. I believe when I installed the headers it was before I installed the engine. Dang, of all the luck!

Usually with a 440, the engine needs to be raised some to get the headers to clear enough to drop out. Also I normally remove the steering column as well.
Current Mopar
70 Challenger RT 440-6 EFI, 73 Cuda 416-6 EFI
05 Hemi Durango, 01 Ram 4x4, 14 Ram 2500 4X4, 10 PCP Challenger 6 spd RT, 01 Viper GTS ACR, 52 B3B w/330 Desoto Hemi, 70 Hemi RR (under const)
Past Mopars
9 x Challengers. AAR Cuda, 4 RR, 2 GTX, 4 Chargers, etc... (too many to list)

I think I have convinced myself to pull the engine completely out now. I have done 90% of the work anyhow. I discovered my rear main seal is leaking and likely  to get worse.
I removed both torsion bars, steering column, starter, and the steering box is loose, and I still can’t get the headers off the studs. I know I can probably pull the studs, but I’m worried that it will screw up the threads.
With the motor out, I can assure that the painter can reach all areas.
Thanks for your help.

Don't pull off the studs.  Back them out.  Use two nuts that are the same thread pattern as the stud.  Put one nut on first, the put the second one on right behind it. Now with the two nuts together, place a wrench on only the innermost nut and back off that nut (counter clockwise).  The outer nut will keep the nut you are turning from moving but what will happen is the stud will back out.  Once the stud is backed out and finger loose, you can break the nuts apart with two wrenches.
