AMD front fenders need some work

My replacement fender is going to need some work. The door to fender gap is awful, really tight at the bottom with the 3/16 gap at the top or if if I line up the bottom to 3/16's, leaves 1/2" or wider at the top. Likely I will add a rod or two of the same thickness to the wide area to bring it in.
Does anyone have any thoughts or alternatives before I start welding?
I thought about cutting the edge on the bottom, but then I would have to weld it up anyhow.
how about on the back side, is it important to weld the backside or just fill in with something like all-metal or short strand fiberglass?

It is not uncommon to have to weld and/or cut/grind the edges of the replacement fenders to get them "right". Not sure what you are referring to about the back side. That said make absolutely sure your doors are aligned and gapped to the quarter panels before doing anything with the fenders. Then make sure that when you test fit the fenders you bolt them down as this will change the shape and fit. This is especially true with the bottoms, when you bolt them they get pulled in and twisted a slight amount which dramatically changes how they align.

Can you get a consistent gap between the fender and door, period? If you can, then I'd consider leaving the back of the fender alone and consider cutting/resetting the attaching points. If you had to section the lower flange it would be easier than welding up and grinding down the whole back edge and I won't even go into the misery of dealing with warpage if you did. Mione are oem and they don't just fall on either. The lft one right now, just sitting on the car, has a 1/4" gap at the rocker and 3/8th at the top. I fitted the bottom first and pushed the top back to where I wanted it and bolted it down and look to see where you're at up front. Some times it takes a fair bit of screwing around, but don't give up, you'll get there.
