    Undercoating or no undercoating-what to use?

    OK i assume since i am restoring my Garn coupe to stock i should re-undercoat since it cam that way?What is the best to use thats as close to stock as possible?

    I dont know about being stock but I plan on using POR15 for my underside.My neighbor did that with his ride and it turned out extremely well.More expensive than paint but very resiliant.

    lol @ the AQHA... my parents are members there too...I wouldnt hesitate to use that por 15 stuff...sure looks as tough as nails    :beer:

    That POR15 is really tough stuff!  Beware, don't let the overspray get away from you!  It is nearly impossible to get it off....don't ask me how I know  :eekbig:

    I used POR-15 on some rust spots on my beater van 3-4 years ago.  Still there, no more rust.  Good strong stuff.

    I use 3M Body Schutz Rubberized coating 08864 black.  It gives the original appearance you are looking for.  Aerosols do not give the factory look.  You will need to use an air compressor and the undercoat applicator gun.  A lift and a poncho are good.  It is messy. I would use the POR15 first, then the undercoat.  The undercoat does not seal as well as POR15.  I use the Schutz for the proper look, as it is outdated technology.  With the 2 products together you will have a very strong rust barrier.

    thanks for the info,but the stuff iwill be using before the undercoating and also my primer is Valspar DTM 2K primer,this is great stuff.Its a sealer,unlike most primers and is DTM direct to metal.I got some where i shouldnt have and couldnt even weld thru it with my MIg,It really seals the car.It will be used on the whoile vehicle prior to paint.It ELiminates a step and also is a sandable filler as well as being DTM and a sealer.The paint shop igot it from said they are seing everyone eventually switching to this primer totally.

    Thanks guys,about time someone read that,he will be any hemi car from 0-20MPH,I'll even race for pinks,lol

    I am doing the underside of my Challenger with POR 15 right now.  I've been dreading doing it but it hasn't been near as bad as I thought.  I painted the POR15 on with a brush and it looks great.  I used the semi gloss black.

    I used the 3m undercoating also on my last car and planned to do it on the Cuda.   It's a bit of a textured rubbery surface.

    Since I last posted I have seen a car undercoated with the truck spray-on bed linner.  It looked great.  I also understand dirt does not stick well to it, allowing one to hose it off for a fresh look.

    WEll undercoating is certainly much less work and less hassle.    I have my car on a rotisserie and have it completely stripped.    Very messy, and fairly time consuming to do this, but I noticed in MCG that the rotisserie cars bring additional $$$$.   Much more than the cost of what it would cost me to do this myself as its not very expensive to strip primer and paint.    I have time and the equipment to do this and paint the underneath.   Doesnt have to be as perfect as the paint on the outside of the car.      Since I wont be driving the car more than 2500 miles a year I wanted to do this.    Then again I tend to overdue things.     I dunno undercoating is fine, I have had two Chevelles that were undercoating, this time I wanted a fully detailed car.
