    Hey Chargin.  We dyed our panels black (no color change).  We used the SEM dye and prep stuff.  It worked really well.  For the duster, we'll be going from gold to white and we just bought some VHT vinyl dye to try.  We should be able to try some out this week...I'll let you know how it goes.

    I'd just get some of the plastic paint and go to it but the dye sounds like a great way to go!!    :worship:    :dogpile:

    Perhaps as reference look down in this same catagory and read "Latest news on interior painting"  a post started by me...........like you I am looking to do the same thing

    Sorry for not reporting in Chargin!  Yes.  We tried to dye on of the arm rests in the duster.  The VHT worked great.  All I did was clean the part really well and put two coats on. The arm rest is very supple and the dye moves and bends with the vinyl.  I'll snap a pic for you and post.

     Hey Rev-it-up which dye do you think is better SEM or VHT? I'm going to dye my Challenger interior panels black soon and wanted to use whatever worked best.
     Also does VHT have all the prep stuff too, like SEM has?

    Hey Evil.  Both products worked really well.  VHT does sell a product for prepping the material, however we did not buy/use it.  It worked well on the armrest without it, however that's the only thing I've done with VHT.  For the door panels, I would use the SEM products.  It really does a great job of removing any grease or dirt and dying the panels completely.  At the end, it really looks like you've done a quality job.

    I hve used both SEM and VHT dyes and I find the SEM to be more natural looking (less gloss). The front seat of my Barracuda was dyed from white to black with SEM and it's been holding up beutifully for two years now. The only place it wears off is on the piping at the edge of the seat where I slide in an out and it just takes a minute to tocuh up a couple of times per year..

    I recomend you use the SEM vinyl or plastic prep (as appropriate for the maerial you are coloring) and clean, clean, clean and then clean one more time. If you get the sligthest hint of fish eyeing you didn't clean enough. Stop let it dry and use the prep one more time.

     How many cans of each type (dye, prep etc) does it take to dye all the plastic in the interior? And how many coats do you use?

    Below is a picture of what we used.  We bought these from Year One at a pretty reasonable price...if you google SEM dye, you'll see several places sell it. 

    To do the two front panels and the rear panels and all the plastic trim, it took two cans of the dye and one can of each of the other three.

    Besides Year One, Eastwoods sells it and SEM products are also available at most autobody supply houses. I get mine at the local Auto Body supply store. Two cans of dye is more than enought to completely dye a bench seat (including the back) from white to black. I would say you should be able to do the door panels and the rear panels with three cans.
