340 cam thrust plate bolts
« on: July 31, 2005 - 12:10:06 PM »
I was installing my new chain tensioner/thrust plate assembly and twisted off one of the bolts with the hole drilled thru the center. Did it come from the factory like that? It looks to be drilled somewhat off-center.

Yup,it`s factory. The oil runs thru the bolt from the galley onto the timing chain.

Cool - thanks for the confirmation on that. There is a circular groove under the head of the bolt - is it supposed to have a rubber O-ring ? Any idea where I can get a replacement bolt?

cool - will do. Since there is no lock washer on these do you guys use Loctite or something to keep them secure?

BTW - the new true roller chain set I bought is nice and tight  :grinyes:

I use a drop of locktight on them to be sure they stay in place

cool - how about bolts that go into water jackets like waterpump and head bolts? Do you put anything on them to minimize leaking?

Mike,
You do have to put sealant on those bolts too. I used something in a white tube with red lettering, I'm drawing a blank on the name right now :banghead:, but if you need it, I can find out for you. It looked like Elmer's glue. If you don't use something, the anti-freeze will seep thru.

I just use teflon tape on the bolts into the water jacket

Are you certain on that? the upper LH (as you are facing the block) goes thru into the lifter vallery. It probably wouldnt get much oil there. The lowest one screws directly into an oil galley. I was pretty sure it was in the lowest hole. Where did you see its location? Its not documented in the 72 manual. Maybe the hole was a later revision? Kind've like the windage tray. I cant find anything on it in the book either.     :dontknow:

CP - thanks for the tip on the teflon. The Teflon doesnt skew torque values on the bolts?

the newer engines have a deflector....., and it goes in the oil galley hole. (plugs it off)
I went out and looked at a engine I have ready to take apart, it has a plastic cam gear, so I am sure it is where it came from the factory. And the hole is at the top left. On the deflector, the oil running from the valley runs down the block face, and onto the deflector, dripping on the chain before it hits th ecrank gear. On the oil hole, it is at the low part of the valley, and oil drips out of the hole, and onto the chain, almost in the same spot.
I dont think th echain oil is pressurized, since it dont take much oil to oil the chain. (the windage does a fine job, except at idle)
im looking thrue a couple books right now, maybe ill find something..............
nothing yet.......also, the main oil feed to the crnak is in th egalley that your tapping into, might not want to waste any...............

AHA! A very old book sais..............If one of the four bolts for this plate has a hole drilled through it, this bolt goes in the  passenger side bolt hole-top left looking at front of the block. Remember, this bolt allows oil to drain from the valley onto the timing chain. Some engines use a small drip pan rather that the hollow bolt.

Ok, I understand - the paasenger  side hole is closer to the bottom of the lifter valley and would drain thru the bolt once the oil level reached a given level.

A .125" hole in the wrong place would probably flatten my oil pressure. I sure don't wanna do that  :grinno:
