A question about heads
« on: August 02, 2005 - 04:57:39 AM »
I was going over the numbers of my recently purchased 340 short block and heads. I looked on MyMopar, and checked the head casting numbers. I came up with the following info:
Casting number    Engine CID   Year    Intake    Exhaust
3418915              340TA       1970    2.02       1.60
3418915              340        1971-72  1.88        1.60

My question is this; Where is the date code on the heads? I've looked, but did not see them. I know the short block is a 1970, but I'm not sure about the heads. Here are some pics. Thanks Again.

Head casting #
Short Block Date Code
Head view
An unknown number on the head
And another

I dont think there is a date code on the older heads, the good news? Is you can narrow it down to 3 years, 70,71,and 72.

is there a clock anywhere on it?

I read that there was supposed to be a date code next to the clock, but I couldn't find anything.

they are definatly Not the T/A heads & they look like the 2.02 valves so my guess is the 71-72 340 head

So they do look like the 2.02 valves? The guy I bought them from said he thought that they were 1.88, but that was just from running numbers.

915's never came with 2.02's, as far as the books go, or I have seen.

OK, thanks. How do I measure them. The width of the valve at the widest point, the inside diameter of the opening, or something else?

the 71 -72 J heads had 2.02 stock , the T/A heads had offset pushrod holes , the intake almost touches the exhaust  in the pix so I bet they are 2.02 heads

they look like 202's to mee also...

the pic...

I believe that is your date - if my memory serves me correctly it's the month, 2 digits, date, 2 digits, and year, 1 digit... so the heads might be from 69... i'll have to check whenI go home to be sure tho...
