70 Racing Mirrors - Can These Be Rechromed?
« on: August 02, 2005 - 09:22:48 AM »

I am looking at buying these mirrors off eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-E-BODY-70-CUDA-CHALLENGER-RALLYE-SPORT-MIRROR_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ34204QQitemZ4565952456QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Couple of questions.

 - Can they be rechromed?
 - Can the glass be removed to get the whole mirror covered? (100% new chrome etc)?

Last but not least, do you think it's worth it? Or is it better to get already chromed NOS type mirrors?

Cheers,

im sure they could be re chromed,do you know how much NOS mirrors are?i guess it would depend on how much it would cost to get those re chromed to see if its worth it or not.

Yip, I know what NOS mirrors are.  ;) :ack: Still nothing on this car is "that'll do......."

True, I'm thinking a re-chrome will be around $70-$100. (NZ)
Roughly an extra $68.00 US to what ever I spend on the mirrors themselves.

So with these mirrors it is definitely worth asking the question.  ;)

They should be abe to strip and prep. them for chrome. I'm doing the same thing with a set for my '73.
I bought a set that was still in original paint, faded/peeling. Only issue may be what was done when they prepped them and primed, any filler used to fil pits/scratches?
A good chrome shop will have to spend quite a bit of time on them regardless, filling in any pits/scratches with metal before they can copper plate prior to chrome. Everything has to be perfect before chrome, otherwise it will show through when done. There was a good article in Mopar Muscle(I think) about chrome restoration that would probaly help you, I'll try and find it when I get back to the MH.
I would think to do the job right you'd be looking at closer to $150-$200 each for chrome.
I haven't priced doing mine yet. And yes you can gut the housing and replace the glass.
I'd find a set that hadn't been prepped already (for paint), easier to see what needs done to them.  :dontknow:

Thanks  4dr, you bring up some good points. My resto guy and I talked about this and he said the same thing.
It's almost better to get crap ones and do them yourself so you at least know whats been done.

Hmmmm, I think I'll skip these and re-check my mirrors to see exactly what they need.

NZ,
For what it's worth, $150 is the going rate for mirror re-chroming.

Some of the prices these guys get for parts have gotten outta hand.........yes I would like 70 mirrors.......but not this bad...........not unless I had a matching numbers hemi convertible Cuda with all options you could get or something........sometimes the expense of something overrates what value you get from it.......... It might win you a $35 dollar concours trophy at a national show, but when push comes to shove when you sell an expensive car, NO WAY the lack of $600 will prevent a buyer from buying it.............fit and finish boys..........fit and finish

It's not for trophies or awards, this car will never enter a show. It's peace of mind and knowing what you have done and spent hours on is the best you could get. Don't get me wrong this car is going to get driven, I mean driven.  :burnout: 8) You pay for what you get.

As I've said from the start, nothing is too good for my Challenger.  ;)

Mike - Thanks for the estimated value.

Is it just me or are the mirrors in the ebay link above different shapes???  Is this right?  I only have the drivers side chrome mirror on my B'cuda and it looks like the drivers side one in the picture and all the passenger side ones I've seen on ebay look like the passenger one shown - whats the deal???

Yip, your right. The mirrors are different shapes.

Drivers door mirror is different to the passengers mirror door.  ;) The wider passenger mirror gave the driver more viewing width.

You can remove the glass etc.  I rechromed my driver's side mirror on my T/A and it cost me $250 CAD for the mirror and pedastal.  That was show quality chrome.

Just thought let you guys know I ended up rechroming my mirrors and they came out great!
All I needed was a pedalstal for the drivers side.
