Thought I'd get this question out the way as it won't be long before mine is installed.
What is correct on the 1970 Challenger R/T grill?


My thoughts are

 - Around light Bezels and the main area is matt Black
 - The honey comb grill is chromed and everything apart from the outside lip (1-1/2" est) is left chrome.

Sound correct?


The grill below is what I am basically meaning.
IMO it looks fantastic (apart from being fuzzy and the "R/T" badge being off center, but the color shceme is what I am meaning.

Thanks mate that grill looks fantastic. What class paint is that? Matt, Flat or Gloss type?  :dontknow:

In terms of the honey comb what is correct? I have seen and prefer the grill to be 90% black with chrome outside edges.  :D

  Bare metal is correct for the eggcrate.  I had the paint mixed to match the bezel, it is a deviation of the black suede used on the dash.

I guess in some photos the grill appears black but it's probably due to the shadow and/or the black behind the grill.

I don't quite follow you about the paint? You used the paint on the egg crate or the grill surround?

The grill and bezels are the same.  The grill looks different because I shrunk the pictures down in size.  Hard to describe but it has a matte but suede sheen to it.

  The R/T grills were painted organisol black. It was a Mopar thing. It was matte black with a little texture to it. You can paint the egg-crate section of the grill too if you want. I've seen them painted black, but I think they came from the factory silver like yours.

There seems to be a difference of opinion here on the true color of the grill...........It seems 98%of the cars i see have the grills black...........the bezels are black I am sure cause I have a nos set of bezels.........I dont doubt the grills were bare metal but I dont think it looks as nice to most people.........and alot of people like the black to contrast the color of the painted radiator support that they paint the color of the car..........however this too I believe was originally black from the factory..............here I am not sure.......i think alot of personal preference goes into this...........however I am interested in originality.   So is the radiator support supposed to be black or the color of the car............I am going to Mopar nats soon and i wanna look at alot of cars to see what is correct and what is simply preference..........if you building a super correct concours, numbers matching car you look for one thing.........when your building a detailed nonmumbers matching 440 or 383 you may wish to do a few things to your car that is unique to your tastes...........great info though, thanks for the pics and info........

Excellent points.  You need to go out and do research on "original" cars.  Now with that said an "original" car is not necessarily that way just because the owner says it is.  It takes time at looking at vast examples to tell how anything was was done as you will see a pattern develop.  Of course there will always be exceptions to the rule, but that is what makes it fun.
