833 Fluid?
« on: August 05, 2005 - 02:53:15 PM »
K, I have recently purchased a '72 Cuda with an 833 trans.  I have looked around, and there seems to be wide-spread disagreement as to the type a fluid that should be used.  Does anyone have some insight into this?

Ok.  So I drained it, and it appears to have engine oil in it.  Should I replace it with the same, or use the ATF?  I have noticed a couple of sites where people have recommended using 10W30.

My father bought his new and it has ATF in it.. If someone put gear oil in it i bet it would be hard to shift cold... There are some gear oils out there that are thin, BUT it must have the correct formula, syncro's are made to BITE, and slow the gear down to engage, if it has anti friction additives in it the syncros wont be able to do thier job!

Maybe that's the cause of my difficulty going into 2nd gear?  Although I think there may be some linkage adjusting that needs to be done.

Please use ATF. I can't imagine useing engine oil. That is much too thick.

Thanks for all the great advice! :dogpile:

Ok, so I'm convinced I need to use ATF.  Now, is there anything I should do to get all of this motor oil (if that is what it is.. it is definitely not ATF, and it is too thin for gear lube) out before filling with ATF?  Or is draining and refilling sufficient?

I'm sorry, but I'm old school and use a multiviscosity gear oil...85-140 is my current choice. I dont drive the cars much in the winter, and in the summer I've never had a problem with hard shifting. I'd say 95% of the shifting problems I've seen are mis-adjusted linkage related. Had lots of experience with these cars, never had a manual trans failure due to lubrication issues.

Just my .02.

Sorry I misread the ?

Do Not use ATF in a 833
the corret fluid is 80-90w gear oil
75 - 90 synthetic is too slippery & it will not shift properly
Mopar has as synthetic "manual Trans Fluid" designed for manual trannys that works well  if you want to use synthetic

I agree- used Atf and the sightest leak will be very noticable- use 80-90w

All 3 and 4 speed man. trannies came from the factory filled with Dexron auto fluid chysler p/n 3549660 and is the type recommended. If objectional gear rattle is apparent the fluid can be replaced with multi-purpuse gear lube SAE 90 or SAE 140. This is from the 73 Dodge factory manual. Drain and refill is fine. No flush required. The Lucas 75-90 & other 75-90 synthetics May be to slippery to allow the syncros to grab properly , there are synthetics with friction moifiers specifically for manual trannys like the Mopar fluid
