I need input on choosing a stall convertor
« on: August 12, 2005 - 02:29:48 PM »
I have a 73 Challenger with 440, .30 over pistons, cam (.236 duration at .050) rebuilt 727 torqueflight 3.55 rear gears   Thanks Mike , I had forgot to add the engine and gear sizes  :dontknow:
The person that I bought the car from had all of the work done when I bought the car and I talked to him and he told me that he wished he had put a stall convertor in the car. He said that  he put a new stock rpm torque convertor in it when the tranny was rebuilt. The question has to do with the torque convertor. What rpm stall do I need to be running? Brands?  any input will be greatly appreciated

I'm just going to have a friendly guess as to what I think.  :) Chryco will know.  ;)

IMO you'll need 3,000 - 3,200rpm stall.  ;)

With a 440 and 3:55's, it usually means something big, but that really isn't a big cam in your motor. Basically, you want the converter locked up when you are getting into the power band of the cam. Depending on how you plan to drive this car, I wouldn't go bigger than 2000-2200 RPM for a stall converter.  Chryco.....

look at the cam specs , Mopar cams with 236* duraton @ .050 have a power band that starts at 2000-2200 Rpm , Engle cams are rated a bit higher at around 24-2500 rpm , so some where in the 24-2600 range for the converter will get the engine into the powerband before the load is applied to the engine , you can run a bigger converter to get higher into the powerband if you want but for streeet use 2500 will work great

Soooo basically where the engine is making the power most at is where you want you converter hold to be?  :D
If you've got a cam and the power band rating is say, 2,800-3,200rpm you'd want a stall of roughly 3,000rpm-3,200rpm?  :dontknow:

no , on the street you need to be into the powerband by a couple hundred RPM , for racing you can use the torque peak as the stall & rev the the HP peak rpm as the shift point
