Concerning your mileage, I have only two ideas......

1) I call bullnuts!   Or....

2) You must have a very light foot, and drive quite mellow.

torch

First off, when I drive on the highway, I try not to exceed 70MPH. Thats when towing or just driving the truck. I've found fuel mileage decreases signifigantly when my speed exceeds 70. Thats especially true towing. And yes, if you want to hit the numbers i get MPG wise, drive it like it has an egg under the accelertor pedal. When you are driving a 400 mile trip, those 10 minutes you save dropping the pedal to the floor pulling out of the toll booth every time dont mean all that much. I check tire pressure every time i go out on a trip. There are a lot of driving techniques and tips that can increase your fuel economy.

Looking at JS27's test loop numbers back me up...he got 17.4 MPG in a 1 ton truck, with 1500 extra lbs, and that test loop is combined city/highway driving if I'm not mistaken. My 23 MPG was an empty 3/4 ton truck, well maintained and driven on highway with fuel economy in mind.

I have heard, 22, 26, 28, even 32 MPG from a cummins before.
I have drove.........
92 Cummins tow truck, 4x4, 4:10's, five speed. 14 best, empty.
95 Cummins 2x4, Auto, 3.55's. 17 best, no trailor, no weight....
2002 Cummins, 1 ton dually, 4x4, felt like 4:10's, it got about 18 light.
I have seen.........12-18 from them, my 71 318 powerd D200 get 14, behind a lighter loaded powerstroke getting 12 (98 powerpoke, 2x4 dually), and monkeys fly right out my butt! OK, maybe not, but still.........................over 20 is BS in my book.
Chev Duramax 1 ton 4x4 12' flatbed, got 12.3 loaded, from a honest guy.

What does a chevy duramax or a ford powerstroke have anything to do with a cummins when comparing fuel economy? Since those engines get crappy fuel economy, I cant possiblly get better????

Maybe you need some lessons in driving for better fuel economy...or maybe you dont care....either way, you infer i must not be an honest guy since i claim over 20MPG. I dont appreciate being called a liar.

Yeah, you should teach me, because I cant get 20MPG out of a 3/4 or 1 ton truck to save my @$$!
Never said you were dishonest, you came to that conclusion by yourself.

BTW?
Powerpokes and Duramax drivers say they get the same gas mileage the Cummins drivers do, and, like I said.......I HAVE SEEN. Maybe it is flat there. And, as far as the lessons? If I can get 5.5-6 MPG in a 550 horsepower, 1950 ft/lbs, 104,000 pound truck, I might know how to drive.

over 20 is BS in my book.
Chev Duramax 1 ton 4x4 12' flatbed, got 12.3 loaded, from a honest guy.

First you say "over 20 is BS in my book"    then you throw in the  "from a honest guy" comment right after that.....so if thats not inferring anybody who claims over 20MPG is dishonest, then accept my appologies for reading too much into what you wrote.

Go to any of the diesel websites, and you'll see plenty of people who claim to get over 20MPG highway from their Cummins diesel trucks..so there must be a lot of people out there who have nothing better than to BS about it...or maybe people do get that, and you are wrong. If i remember correctly, are you not from Alaska? I'd imagine with the extreme weather conditions and bigger grades you encounter out there than i do in the east (Pa, Del, NJ, Md, Va) that it might be harder to obtain the mileage i get. Just because you dont experience something, it does not make those that do all BS'ers.

As far as driving rigs...my father was an owner-operator for over 25 years, and i drove and helped maintain his trucks, so I know a little about commercial driving too.

your not gonna get them same fuel mileage out of a 1 ton truck as you will a 3/4 ton truck!! thats obveous!! i know people with 318 dakotas that get 18 mpg i get 12 out of my 318 1/2 ton!! the weight size of the truck plays a big impact!

When my '91 diesel PU was new, the difference between it and a one ton was $75, and one extra leaf on each corner. In my book, that is a negligable difference. Loaded to GVW is a different story.

Only pic i have is of my dakota which i can't remember if i posted it or not...and i agree with 6pac and hemi because i have a 92 dodge 1 ton single wheel 2wd 5spd and i have constantly got 21 mpg with the colder weather and me letting it idle and warm up before i take it out has cut the milage...but when it was warm i have gotta 21 mpg week after week and that was driving 3 miles to school and back and 5 miles to work and back...and trust me i didn't always have a light foot.i bet if i took it on a long trip i'd do alot better..and i talked to my neighbor that has a 99 dodge 3\4 ton diesel 5 spd and he said he'd get 18 city and 20 highway but his was also 4wd..and i wouldn't  call southern iowa exactly flat either...
