BArracuda in backyard- old guy owner - for sale ? - funny story
« on: August 14, 2005 - 09:42:06 AM »
This happened last week. I saw a house for sale in GF's neighborhood, pick up flyer to see what house is selling for. In the picture of the house I can see a mopar bumper.
It looks like a 67-69 style. Walk around the house as much as possible [ fenced+neighbor houses].  Can only see the rear 1 ft of a notchback barracuda.

Next day go back intending on asking if it's for sale. He also has a boat trailer out front w/ for sale sign.
Guy is leaving house coincidentally. Conversation goes something like this....

Me " HI, I see your selling your house and some things in the yard"
Him " yeah I need to get rid of those two cars" , points to two junker 80's type 4 doors [ in full view]
Me " Well, I was wondering about the barracuda in the backyard"
Him " How much will you give for it ?"
Me  " Umm, I can only see the back 1 foot of the car from here, kind of hard to make an offer"
Him " Well how much ?"
Me " well what is it exactly?'
Him " 67 barracuda, 318, bench seat, bad interior, runs, bad brakes "
Me " How long since it was on the road"
Him " about 5 years, How much?"
Me " Maybe $1000 depending on what I can't see from here.."
Him " Not Enough !"
Me " how much is enough?"
Him " 35 "
Me " 3500 dollars ??"
Him " No, $35,000 dollars"
Me, stifling a laugh " I don't think any 67 factory 318 car is worth that much..."
Him " old cars are worth a lot, my son has 5 old Vettes, I know what old cars are worth, I used to be a police officer, quit though, I'll shoot anyone who comes in the yard, I'll have to ask my son if he wants to sell, he owns a [Small RV sales} business in town"
Me " Ok, maybe I'll stop back by"

We then have a nice conversation about his sons and deceased wife and her funeral, and he shows me old picture of them, etc.
Nice guy, but yikes, his pricing is a bit off !

I'm considering going to the RV dealer to find the son. But if he's anything like his dad....
Probably try to get $70,000 out of me by including a 1977 Chevy conversion van in the deal.  :grinno:

yes, some people don't have a clue. I restore old antique jukeboxes as a hobby (now second to the Cuda resto). There is a large music warehouse closeby called "Forever Young"  Its one of the few places I can go to get 45's for some of my collectable jukes. Anyhow I go in there one day and behind the counter is an old tired Wurlitzer 600. This is a 30's box that has really never come into collectablilty like the model 1015 with the arched top and bubble tubes. Well I just have to ask the owner about it. He says he bought it at an estate sale and put it in the store to resell. The conversation was similar to yours: "I'll take 15" he says. "1500" I ask?  "No, $15K". Well let me tell you, a W600 is barely worth $500 in as-is, unrestored condition. $15K will nearly buy you the most collectable W850 or W950.

Just because its old doesn't mean it's valuable.  :nono:

I had a similar story last year. Guy pulls in a 71 GTX in his yard. The guy is a wheeler and dealer....I talk to him one day and look at the car. The car was originally a 440 auto car. Motor and tranny are long gone. Someone carves in a quick shift into the tub....body is starting to rot, bumpers are bent and rusting. Interior needs alot of work. The only really redeaming factor of this car is the fact that it has a Ram Air hood on it. He says to call him later in the week. He has to talk with his partner about it.

So I call back later a woman answers the phone;

Me: Hi, I would like to speak with Jesse about the GTX....
Lady: You can talk to me about it.....
Me: I had talked with Jesse about making a trade for the GTX....(she interrupts)
Lady: We want 12 for it....
Me: I had talked to Jesse about possibly making a trade for that GTX for my Cudas.
Lady: We have been entertaining offers of 15 for it already
Me: Well I guess I may be able to come up with twelve hundred dollars
Lady: No, Twelve Thousand dollars....
Me: Twelve......(Hesitation) Thousand Dollars??
Lady: Like I said we have been entertaining offers of $15,000 already.
Me: Well I think that ya'll are smokin some pretty good crack there....
Lady: So I take it that you are not interested
Me: Not at that price....the cars is worth $2500 as is to the right person
Lady: Ok
Me: Hang up...

As of yesterday, the car that they had been entertaining offers of $15K for, is still sitting in the same place as it was last year when they pulled it in the yard. What a shame!

lemon twist - so she didn't deny the allegation of crack use ! Seems articulate for a cracky though.
I can imagine the ad they ran : "1971 GTX, 1 of 5 [in that county], rare N96 hood, original paint, Super shifter installed, awesome motor+ tranny[sitting under a ripped tarp in the rain for 10 yrs/ a poly 318], needs nothing but TLC [ Mother theresa couldn't give that much TLC without cursing], spare parts [a used drum brake assembly from an early A body, and some plastic pieces so discolored they look rusted,] $20K obo."

MikeT - How much does a restored model 1015 go for ?
Maybe he is hoping for someone with more $$ than brains. You think owning a shop selling 45's he'd be more informed.
on an aside, I visited a store called Amoeba records in SanFrancisco while on vacation. They had used records, Cd's, posters, etc. all guaranteed to have no skips.
It was huge. Located in an old bowling alley building !   I'm told there are a couple other locations as well in S.F.

Well 74MOPAR,
Maybe the son will see the problem with his fathers price on the car....point out what NADA says.....and what is wrong with the car...else wise if yer lookin for one, there are others out there for far less than they are asking for this car....

Hard to tell, I think his denture-grip wasn't holding too well...

Update to this story.....I called once again on the GTX in the story below.....he is now asking $1000 for it.....now to figure out how to go about getting up the cash and to get it outta here!

PERSEVERANCE FOLKS, PERSEVERANCE!

LOL!  LMAO!

These people don't have a real good idea what these things are worth (jukebox included)  but they figure people may be willing to bargain down from thier stated high price.  I feel bad for the people that may actually pay too much in these instances.

Here's some '71 GTX info from Musclecarclub.com:

Comments: As somewhat of a surprise, the GTX returned for 1971. It was slightly smaller than the year before, and rode on a wheelbase one inch shorter at 115 inches. Its new styling was curvaceous and very attractive, The fuselage styling featured rounded fenders and a loop bumper front and rear. A new hood with cutouts was standard and a revised Air Grabber was optional. The windshield wipers were now hidden and the side markers were larger. The GTX also received a wider rear track to improve handling. Under the hood, the GTX was not watered down like some of its competitors and still came with its 440 standard (though down 5 bhp to 370 bhp) and the 440+6 and Hemi were still optional. Sales were down to just 2,942 units (only 30 with the Hemi), and this would spell the end of the GTX, and the Hemi engine. The GTX would reappear as an option on the Road Runner for 1972.

Production: 2,942.
Engines: 426 Hemi V8 425bhp@5000rpm, 490lb-ft@4000rpm. 440 V8 370bhp@4600rpm, 480lb-ft@3200rpm. 440+6 V8 390bhp@4700rpm, 490lb-ft@3200rpm.
Performance: 440/370: 1/4 mile in 15 seconds @ 95 mph.
