No Starty
« on: September 20, 2005 - 08:18:33 AM »
I know this subject has been beat too death but I tried doing a search but didn't come up with all the answers I was looking for. The weather forecast for today was great so planned on driving the 74 Chally into work today. But it wouldn't start, sounded like there was no spark what so ever and didn't have time to trouble shoot other then doing a quick visual to make sure that the ignition wire was running from the dist. to the coil and that all the obvious wires were connected. So, when I get home tonight I need to work on it and would like a little cheat sheet on where to start. I know there should be appr. 12v on the positive side of the coil with the key in the ON position and suspect this is where the problem exists but am not sure where to go from there? PS: this is equiped with Electronic Ignition
Thanks a ton

Hi basement, how are you?  Murphy's law:  It'll never start when you really want it to.  Too bad the glitch happened with the website because there was a really good thread on this but I think it's gone.  I assume you have adequate fuel.    I'm no pro but someone here will come to rescue you!

Check out this link.  It's a road side trouble shooting article from Mopar Action Magazine that I think is very helpful.  I guess with these cars if you can afford it, it's an idea to keep an extra ballast resistor and  ECU handy.  Good luck!

it could be a number of things , the ballast is bypassed when cranking so that should not be the problem but it is worth checking it
it could be a bad coil , check resistance across the 2 low voltage terminals on the coil , it should read 10 ohms max
it could be the pick up in the dist , check for resistance across the 2 prong plug
it could also be a bad ECU

OK, so I get home from work last night. Threw on a pair of jeans and ran out to check on the machine. The first thing I checked was for voltage on the + side of the coil and it was like 11.48v with the key in the RUN position. I thought that should have been down around 8v or so, any thoughts? Anyways, I turned the key to START and low and behold and started up. You gotta hate it when things start working again with no explanation. Maybe the coil connection was loose and I fixed it when I was checking with the meter, oh well.
