Possible 440 Purchase out of Motorhome????
« on: September 22, 2005 - 05:11:40 AM »
I have the chance to purchase a 440 out of an original 1972 motorhome.  The engine is original for the motorhome and has only 22,000 miles on it.  Supposedly starts on first click....  My question is whether these motorhome 440s were detuned?, different cam? lower compression?  Is there any difference to 440 TNTs?

Hi,
Be sure that it is a 440 i bought one the vin tag said 440 and the guy i got it from bought it new and never had the engine replaced and i got it home to find out that it was a 413. I have used a 440 out of a motor home before and it was fine i beleive the heads maybe be small but the manifoilds need to be changed other then that it was fine!
later good luck!

My cousin just bought on , the same thing. According to one mopar article I read, the only difference is the camshaft. The block is a basic 440. Same pistons, rods, heads, ect... as any 440 put into normal production vehicles of the year.

Keep an eye out for early 70s 413 motorhome engines.  These blocks were cast using 440 molds, but only bored to 413 spec.  They are also usually the "cold weather" blocks with extra ribbing.  I have heard from several sources that even when bored to 440 standard bore that these blocks have exceptionally thick cylinder walls.  I have a 72 413 motorhome block in my garage.  It came with the industrial heads which had a water pump port directly in front of each head.  There was also a special pump housing that directed coolant into both the block and heads.  Throw all that stuff away and bolt on whatever standard heads you want to use, and you will have the ultimate in stock RB blocks.
