Need your help....rebuild the 383 or drop in a 440
« on: September 24, 2005 - 07:48:08 AM »
Had the 383 pulled from my'74 Cuda and taken to my machine shop for a rebuild....baaaad news when they got inside, as they'd need to resleve one cylinder due to a ring breaking and scoring the sidewall.

Now for the dilemma....they can either rebuild the 383, or for $300 more, they'll take a core 440 block that they have and build it up for me.

Which way should I go???  Not being a numbers matching car, the 440 seems to be the way to go, as there's not replacement for displacement, and I assume the resale value of the car (not that I'm ever ever gonna sell this car) would be higher with the 440.  What's y'all thoughts?   I need to decide by Monday.

Thanks

No contest, for the 300.00 you can't go wrong! For the extra money you'd spend on the 383 to re sleeve it, I'd take the 440 in a heartbeat! What year is the 440?

The problem isn't the 300 dollar difference in rebuild, its the associated hardware for the swap. For instance, you will need a new intake, bigger carb, alt-bracket, and if your car is a manual....you might even need a bigger clutch/bellhousing. I say build the 440 even with the additional cost of those items.....

The only different item you should need will be the intake. everything else swaps over, brackets and pulleys etc.  Go for the 440!!

The decision is a no brainer...........build the 440.    I have a 70 RT/SE with a blown 383 also.......  everyone digs the 440s and the resale value and hype factor is much greater with the 440s.     I bought a 69HP 440 motor and am building it with .055 over Ross pistons complete Compcams set up, along with quality machine work and a good intake and carb.      Best of luck

I agree 100%, there aren't too many things you will need for the swap, the heads will even work, one other thing you will need, the distributor is different. Everything else will interchange. You'll be rockin in no time!!

The extra $300 includs a new electronic distributor, new intake and new flexplate, so that's another reason why I"m leaning towards the 440.

You better tell them to go ahead before they have chance to re-think this!!!!!!!!
