OK now the car won't start even with a fresh battery.  Sounds too me like we have multiple problems brewing here!

Is there one thing that could be causing all these problems? I never had problems starting it before. Could a bad voltage regulator cause it to die at idle and also cause it to not start?

I know a bad ignition coil could cause these symptoms, except that when I try to start it, it doesn't turn over. If it was a bad ignition coil it would turn but not fire, so that's not it.

A bad starter would explain the not starting, but wouldn't cause it to die at idle.

I want to cling to the hope that there is only 1 problem. I know there *may* be more than 1 problem, but the fact that all this is happening at once leads me to believe it's just one thing.

There is only one thing that I can see that would cause all of this. A bad connection somewhere in the system. Are your battery cables good? Are the battery terminals clean? Does the black battery cable have a good solid connection to the block? Does the red cable have a good connection to to the starter, and starter relay?

Agree with Mike

You could try with a jumper cable from battery negative to a place on the engine were you are sure it`s ground (no color and such).

Thanks for the suggestion. I will take a look at the connections.
