318 parts into 340 block???
« on: September 26, 2005 - 10:39:33 AM »
Ok I know this is potetially a really stupid question and I should just look up the rod length and crank facts but I am going to ask anyway.  I found a 340 block the other day that I can afford and I was wondering if my 318 internals (rods, crank) will work in the 340.  I heard at one point the cranks were the same is this true?

the rods & crank are basically the same , the balancing is different on the 340 due to higher piston weight , this can be easily be fixed by balancing the rotating assy though

so all I really need then is a 340 block and pistons if I have 318 crank and rods? I wonder why more people don't just take that route?

340 blocks are not very common

Most 318s have those skinny rods though

A better Idea might be to build a 360

the 318 crank will work but a 360 crank wont the crank journals on a 360 is bigger! but 318 rods are not very good!!

I wouldn't say that they aren't very good, but the 360's definately have better rods.  The 318's will work fine though for a mild street application.

the 360 rods can be used in a 318/340

how much will the 360 rods afect your stroke on a 318 crank?? thats no a bad idea!! i thought about scraping the 318 build and just building the 360 but if i could use 360 rods with the flattops in the 318 that might run decent!!

I didn't say put a 360 crank in a 340. I said build a 360.
I know that wasn't one of the options but the 318 in a 340 is just not a good idea. The 360 already has the good rods as chryco and 6pk pointed out, they are still cheaper then 340 parts and they start out with 20 more cubic inches.

The advantage to the 340 is the steel crank, bigger rods and better heads. None of which you have.
(just a thought)
