Can't wait for the 408 Update
« on: September 26, 2005 - 06:14:28 PM »
The 408 build is coming together ahead of schedule.  I started last month allowing the whole winter to build it complete. I got the block back from machining last week (bore, hone, align hone mains, deck, etc.) and dropped off the new rotating parts for balancing today. I am struggling to round up the parts as even a bearing set seems to take a couple of weeks.  The rings were wrong so that will take another couple of days.  I am glad I started early as this  would be plain frustrating if this happening in March.  I should be ready to start assembling the short block in a couple of weeks.  The heads should be ready in another week or so too.  I still need to order the cam, lifters, rockers, pushrods and chain this week.  It will be along time until spring when I can finally fire it up!

Hey Matt.  Sounds like you'll be busy for a while, but it will all be worth it next spring when you fire her up!  Good luck!

Thanks.  I'm not sure of how much rumble the cam will give me but I'm sure it will sound great.  Nothing beats firing up a Mopar after a long winter!

I'm trying the new Edelbrock Magnum aluminum heads with the stud mount (Chevy) style rockers.  It'll be different anyway.

Thats the nice thing about the Magnum heads.  I can use Chevy rockers.  The Comp Cams Pro Magnums are $200 US.

uhhh, that's the first time I ever heard that, are you sure???????

They do use a rocker and stud arrangement but have different parts than chevies use.

I've been posting as this thing comes together hoping some of you might find it interesting (I hope). I finally got the basic short block together after much documented trouble getting adequate piston to crank clearance and proper deck height. Nothing another $700 of machining couldn't fix.  Oh well. My TTI headers arrived from Mancini and they look great.  I'm glad I sprung for them as they are the best small block header from what I've seen.  The Hughes hydraulic roller cam will arrive this week which should keep me busy for a while assembling the top end.  I had purchased a Comp Cams 274XE flat tappet hydraulic cam but changed my mind.  Unfortunately the Milodon oil pan kit won't get here until January unless I cancel the order and go to Mancini.  Can't wait until spring!

Thanks for the interest guys.  I have the Chevy 1.6 Comp Cams Pro Magnum lifters and they do fit.  It's nice to have some decent selection of reasonably priced parts!  My Hughes hydraulic roller cam and lifters just showed up today.  They look great.
