New rims and tires on the Challenger
« on: September 26, 2005 - 11:16:08 PM »
Here's a before pic of my 72 Challenger with the polished slot mags on 215/60/14's in the front and 245/60/14's in the back just to compare.

Then with Centerline Autodrags and BFG T/A Radial tires.
The fronts are 15x7's with 3-5/16" bs on 225/60/15's
The rears are 15x8.5's with 4-7/8" bs on 295/50/15's
******NOTE: This is on a stock E body width rearend, I HAD to use a 7/16" Mr.Gasket wheel spacers to give the tires at least 1/2" clearance from tire bulge to leafspring, because all it had was 1/16" to 3/16" clearance without them. I also installed 3" long ARP wheel studs and open end lug nuts in the back, so I'd have plenty of threads for the spacers*****

what an improvement, amazing look. Well done 8)

what`s the rear spring/shock set up? Standard springs or SStock/retempered? I was talking to a guy at the weekend with a 71 Challenger who had 275/60/15 on the back and he had to have the springs retempered to lift the back end by an inch.

I'm impressed Evil, I don't like the look of the ones on my new Challenger and I'm trying to figure out what to go to.  The pics really help.
Very nice.

Thanks everyone, and thank's for ALL the info everyone has posted about tire and wheel combo's. It really helped me ALOT in finding the look and stance I wanted.
I was surprised how much this changed the look of the car, it does make it look even more EVIL!! Muahahahaha ;^)

what`s the rear spring/shock set up? Standard springs or SStock/retempered? I was talking to a guy at the weekend with a 71 Challenger who had 275/60/15 on the back and he had to have the springs retempered to lift the back end by an inch.

The shocks are just some stock looking ones, but soon it will get some KYB gas shocks.
As for the leafsprings, they came with the car when I bought it, the previous owner said he had them done. The numbers on them are 3643594, so maybe someone here will know. The leafsprings have not been moved in either.
The 275/60/15's have an O.D. of 28.0 while the 295/50/15's have an O.D. of 26.7 so that may help ya with clearance.

would you still need the spacers if you used a 5 inch back spacing?? would it matter if the wheel is 8 inches or 8.5

A 5 inch backspacing would make it closer to the leafsprings by 1/8th", with an 8" rim you'd loose the 1/2" on the outside facing the fender if the backspacing stayed the same. It may give ya a little bit on the inside just because it's pulling the tire in farther but I don't think it would be enough to not have to use the spacers. The offset on the pic Chryco posted on your original post works good, I just couldn't get the right offset with the Centerlines.
