72-74 rear, silver or black? What's the deal???
« on: September 30, 2005 - 12:32:54 AM »
I have never understood this...why some cars have silver on the back (with black by the tailights) and some cars are painted black? Anyone know why????

Not to take over the thread, but related to this question:

If a Rallye had a black rear panel, what is correct in the "pockets" for the taillights?  Black or silver?  I've seen both.

Her's a pic with the silver taillight pockets:
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

I thought all Rallyes had a black tail panel?  Is this what you have? (See pic, sorry about the size!)  Was your car painted before?  My car has a black tail panel and black around the lights but it's been painted before.  Not sure if I'm supposed to have silver (argent) around the lights themselves.

I tried to figure the same thing out a while back. There seems to be no clear answer as I also saw a original pormotional video's for the challenger and in one shot at the beginning it was black with argent around the lights and at the end it was the opposite??????  I just painted mine the way I like it best.

So the plot thickens...

I wonder if there was clear cut rules on this. There is a 74 Rallye car I'm looking to buy, it's all original and the the tail is black. Here's another one...we've all seen the Challengers with both, the middle is silver and the tailight sections are black. I was never sure if that was stock, just thought the tailights were replaced. Need more pics of unrestored cars to solve this mystery...PLEASE!

I too have seen Ralleys done both ways with silver or black as the dominant color
I have never seen a factory car done with black center & silver tailights though , in that case someone has switched tailight housings for sure
