As long as the battery circuit is good (meaning low to no voltage drop on the alternator output to battery positive, and good grounds etc.) it shouldn't make any difference if the battery is in the trunk or not.

Hey 8 Pack, what gauge cable did you run to the battery in the trunk? Did this work okay before you re-located the battery and does it start fine if you charge the battery?

How new is the alternator?

What does the battery read when it's running? Should be 13.5-14.4 volts.

I had a similar problem with my truck, freeway speeds it was okay, but around the block it would drain out, replaced the alternator and problem solved. The alternator was charging the battery, then draining it right back out. The diodes were shot.

shot happens.

Dont send the altenator back just yet.    First go to a Autozone or O Reillys and they can check your altenator to see how much its putting out.

if your not running a cut off switch, why not connect the alternator to the battery at the starter stud. You can cut down on the length of the smaller wire off of the alternator and flow most of the current back up the bigger bat positive.

I am running a cut off switch......2 guage Battery cable is connected right to alternator....are you talking about running the smaller wire off the starter that normally runs to the relay under the hood run direct to the battery post on the alternator...

I don't know if this is any help or not, , ,  I trunk mounted my battery as well, I'm using an alternator that has been sitting since 1992 , a regulator that is the same, a starter , the same , and have no problems with charging. I would try another voltage regulator or take a voltage reading at the battery first and work my way back to the alternator . Could be a bad battery, or any of the affore mentioned !
Wish I could be more help !

Hey , I bought a brand new regulator once ( way back in the past ) ( but the past serves us in our present ! ) that was bad ! Check your voltage at the battery with a meter with the motor idleing around 1500 or so, it should be around 14 volts.

No. I was talking about the heavy output lead from the battery. You can charge the battery from the alternator back through the heavy battery cable without having to run an output all the way back to the battery. But since you're running a cut off switch you can't run the set up. It would create a loop. If you tried to shut off the car with the switch and the alternator was connected at the starter point, the alternator would take the place of the battery and the car would keep running. I know this for sure. I tried it... It was the first time I had set the battery in the trunk. Always learning.
