Vanishing Point, what engine?
« on: October 03, 2005 - 08:54:38 AM »
We finally rounded up a DVD of the movie Vanishing Point yesterday and could hardly wait to get home to watch it. The last time I had seen it was at the Drive Inn with a case a beer and a few of my best buds when it was first released. So, it was like watching the movie for the first time again. Does anyone know what motor was in the Challenger? There's references made to it being 'Supercharged'. I am no Mopar expert by any stretch but certainly don't believe that Dodge supercharged any of their Challengers, even the R/T's. And then the main character tells one of his friends what it is but we couldn't quite make out what he said because of all the background noise but I thought he said 'a suped up 1.7'??? Over all I thought it was a good movie for what it was. The movie was not overly packed with car crashes but still had some awsome chase scenes. And who wouldn't want to be behind the wheel of their car (no matter what kind it is) on those way long straight stretches of pavement. Looking forward to watching the movie again with the Directors commentary.

The original Barry Newman Vanishing Point car had a 440ci in most of the scenes you can pause it and zoom in on the hood emblems they read "440 Magnum". They used 3 440 Magnum 4-Speeds and one 383ci Torqueflite during the making, no HEMI's.

The remake used a HEMI and the only time you see the engine it is infact in a Charger bay just trick photography.
They actually used a 440 cubic inch for filming though with many engines being used for incar shots, 140mph shots, chase cars etc.

The entire car is being professionally built.
I am the parts collector getting all the parts sourcing done, harder to do down here, I go around weekly sometimes hourly and get filled in on what they've done and learn as much as I can while I'm there. They are awesome and bascially feel like the car is theirs. That's what I want that kind of work ethic. We meet weekly to fix up the account and also for me to discus what I want done with certain parts, personal touches etc...

It's coming along nicely thanks mate, I will be doing a decent update with HEAPS of progress late this month.

Cheers,
Carl

That my plan also. to be the parts locator. That in itself can be a job.
Can't wait for your update later this month.

Tropicalcats,

I don't think you will be able to rent Vanishing Point anywhere. I mean, I don't think Blockbuster keeps 34 year old movies around that didn't do much at the box office. I picked mine up cheap on E-Bay. There are 2 versions now in case you didn't know it. FOX had a remake of it in 1996. A little different plot, but the same ending.  :'( :'( :'(

I borrowed Vanishing Point through Netflix.  $10 a month for unlimited DVDs delivered.  I think its a great deal if you rent many movies.  I also borrowed Bullitt, & Gone in 60 seconds.  I have the 2nd Vanishing Point on order now.

I have several VHS copys that I loan out to those less fortunate to have seen the originial in 71, my 13yr daughter loves to watch it and takes it so sleep overs. I recently got the DVD with the version released in England that has the woman hitchhiker sene in it, If you havent seen that one it is a differant perspective of the film that you need to see, personelly
the american relase is better
