steering shaft coupler rebuild
« on: October 04, 2005 - 08:29:39 PM »
I bought the steering coupler rebuild kit (still available from Ma Mopar) and the shaft still has a little bit of rotational slop inside the coupler box. The inside walls of the coupler housing are smooth and don't appear to have any wear at all. What is wrong here? Do all these couplings have slack in them? I didnt measure it but I estimate .060" to .080" free rotation in the coupling alone.

Can you snap a pic of what you have.  I'm guessing you have your clip on wrong??

Did it come with instructions?  I bought a coupling rebuild kit from Richard Ehrenberg (Mopar rag writer) and it had some good instructions.  I'll see if I still have them.

Yes you have the clip installed incorrectly.  The clip goes on the side of the shaft and not on the bottom.  This is where your slop is coming from.  I'm looking for pics!

hmmm....for the clip to go 90o from where its at, I think the dogs would have to rotate also right?

A proper illustration would tell the story. Appreciate your help guys

Wow 4C, thanks.

So the clip and the dogs both go 90o from where I have them. Does it matter which side of the shaft the bumper on the clip goes to?

4C has it right , the clip can go to either side & the shoes are wider one way than the other so with the clip at the side of the sfaft the play will be eliminated

ok, one more thing - I saw this guy on Moparts selling a complete coupler w/rebuild kit. Are there two O-rings that are supposed to be included with the kit?  I think I may have got shorted. Ck out the pic:
