My '71 resto (updated 10-28-13)

And so it begins...

Back in July of  ‘05 I moved into a place that has a garage and allowed me to start my restification on my 1971 Dodge Challenger.  I really like the threads where members show the start of the resto and then only post their update info/pics in one place.  So If I post any progress stuff, it will be on this thread.

I bought my car in March of 2004 and it promptly went into storage.  Since I couldn’t work on it, I started to gather some of the parts that it was missing or would definitely  be replaced.  The one good thing about this car is that it was pretty complete.  But, this car  had been sitting and neglected for several years and needs a lot of metalwork.  I planned on replacing/upgrading all of the drivetrain, breaks, and suspension.  I really want a car that is safe and dependable enough that I can get in and drive it anywhere.  I’ll try to tackle most of the paint and bodywork, but it will probably be finished by someone else. 

My cars VIN is JH23G1BXXXXXX.

It originally is a Citron Yella car with a black vinyl top and a black interior.  It had a 318/727, A/C and power disk brakes.

The first thing that I needed to address was the roof.  It looked pretty bad, but it was light surface rust and  the only soft spots were near the seam on the sail panel.  After a lot of grinding and some of Eastwoods rust neutralizer it looked decent.  I gave it a quick spray-can coat of primer to hold it for now.

Next I started on the floor and the forward spring mount on the passenger side.  I bought front and rear floor pans from Sherman and the spring mount from Auto Rust Technicians.  Since this part of the frame was toast I fabricated my own piece.  After it’s all said and done, I will put on a full frame cap.  I’ll also have to make a new panel for under the rear seat.  I hope to have the new spring mount in this weekend.

Nice job with the frame repair and the great pics to show how you did it.   Nice sequence.   As I was scrolling down the pics I saw the rusted frame rail and thought,"How's he gonna fix that?" and the next pics answered my question!  Welding and such is out of my league for now.  (Insert "I'm not worthy" smiley here!)

Keep us updated!  Keep up the good work!

I agree, this is going to be a good thread to watch, this is what I enjoy as much as any other thread on the site, Rusty Cuda comes to mind right away, watching him do his magic has been a real treat and this will no doubt be the same as it goes on! Ouch, that was quite rusty! (kind of reminds me of my old '69 Charger I was going to attempt to restore.)  Your work so far looks really good, though.  Keep it up!

Did you fab up your own frame pieces?
Yes.  I found a local metal supplier and I got some 11 gauge (1/8") for the frame and 16 gauge for the floor pan.
i am amazed that the frame is that rusty when the body doesn't look near as bad.  Was it just sitting in a field for a long time?
I don't know much of the history of the car.  But it must have been sitting outside for a long time.  I think that most of the water came in through the rust holes on the sail panel.  The floor, trunk and most of the rear frame was rusted out completely.


This weekend I cut out the rusted portion of the inner rear rocker panel and fabbed in a new piece.  Today I welded in the new forward spring mount and started work on the floor pan.
