The Grand Daddy of ALL 71 Cuda's Hands down
« on: October 12, 2005 - 02:59:14 PM »
This is in my opinion by far the evilest looking 71 Cuda' to ever grace the Planet. I fell in love with this car when i saw the movie in 1979 at the theater and I came across this picture while web surfing today between classes. To me this is the undeniable Top of the heap. I will own a clone of this car. Click on the jpeg to open the picture up, you'll sleep better tonight after you see it :)

Back in the early 90's, I contemplated about dressing up as the tall man and driving my Cuda around on Halloween. But, I didn't have the balls to do it.

Here's a synopsis of the movie NZ.  All mopar fans must see this movie!

Often considered one of the icons of 1970s independent horror cinema, director Don Coscarelli's classic nail-biter follows two boys who, in pursuit of an odd-looking grave robber, may wind up as the newest members of a freshly dead slave race. Jody (Bill Thornbury) and Mike (Michael Baldwin) discover that the creature (Angus Scrimm) stealing cadavers walks the earth but lives in the afterworld -- and that it needs more corpses.

Ah, your welcome for the picture, I love this car, I think the 71 was the most agressive looking muscle car to come out of Detroit, there's just not a stupid line on the car. The man who designed the 71 Cuda' was an artist. The actual car for the movie is owned to this day by the Director of the film Don Coscarelli. this car was actually a 340 4 speed car in real life and a 440-6 car in the movie, it also had Keystone Classics and a sunroof in the film which obviously are missing from the rendering I posted. I love the fact that they used a cuda in all the sequels (70 hard top, and a 70 Convertible) but this car just does it for me. Too bad they're so ridiculous in price but i am a body man by trade and a mechanic to boot so if a basket case ever comes along I will snatch it up quick. By the way, I believe Mopar Collectors Guide did a story on this car several years ago, if any body knows which issue it was in, and the year, could you let me know and maybe post a picture of the cover for me. appreciate it very much, Dave

The real truth that I so far know is that they had 4 cars to do the first movie. As you may know, there is a scene in the first one, where the Cuda flips over and crashes. Don't worry too much. It was a 318 stunt car that had louvers put on it. From what I recall, it was a rust bucket that they destroyed in the movie. The best one that you saw Reggie in, was on a trailer with a camara on the truck carrying it. That one, was a really nice car. I'm not sure if it was original or not. I doubt it.(So many years gone by now) Anyway, there  was a time crunch to get all 4 cars ready for the movie. The company that was in charge of getting the cars ready, was barely able to deliver them in time. I know  quite a bit about all this because when I first restored my car the first time, I did it because the movie was out at the time. So, I decided to copy it from the ugly green it once was. Getting back to who, what, when, and where. There was a story, I believe in Mopar Muscle that talked about all the movie scene details. There is your lead on all the details about the movie and the car(s) I wish I could be more informational than this, but I hope this helps.

I like a 70 Cuda better, it has a cleaner apperance. But 71's are still bad ass no question, along with the Challengers are some of the meanest looking cars of the 70's. I would also have to pick a 70-73 Trans am and Formula with a 455.
