Rear Axle Seal Leaking
« on: October 13, 2005 - 09:58:32 AM »
The seal in my 742 8/34 axle is leaking where the drive shaft attaches.  Could someone explain to me what parts I need to buy to fix this problem, where you recommend buying these parts and any important information I should know when attempting this fix.  It doesn't appear to be rocket science to replace the seal but I've never done it before.  So it will probably be a five day job for me.  It is a suregrip rear end so I don't want to risk the rear end driving it before I fix this problem.  Thanks.

I believe the part you are looking for is called a YOKE . . . . No JOKE!  I also think there is a seal there too but not sure as mine is a dana 60 and could be different.  Someone will know!

put a mark on the center & the nut , then undo the nut , you will need an impact to do this , it is torque to 250 ft lbs , once the nut is removed use a hammer & tap the yolk off , now pry out the seal & replace ti , check the yolk to see if it has a bad groove where the seal rides , you can fix this with a sleeve if it is worn , now reinstall the yolk & retighten the nut until the marks you had made line up again , top up fliud level

Thanks Chryco.  The car is at the body shop right now.  He should be done with it by Monday so I should be doing the replacement next week.  What is the seal called?  I'd like to order it this weekend if you could tell me what the part is called or can provide a number.  I really appreciate your sharing your knowledge on this. :-}
