Power Brake Booster Color?
« on: October 16, 2005 - 10:07:58 PM »
Hi again C-C,

It has been a long two months of work but I finally have my 71 Cuda all torn down and out to the body shop.  Now I am focusing on refurbishing all those rusty component parts.  Can anyone tell me what the original color of the power brake booster is suppose to be?  Was it dichromate-plated or black.  Mine is so rusty I can't really tell.  Any recommendations for a rebuilder of these boosters?  Any help would be greaty appreciated.  Thanks, Ed

"Booster Dewey" is the man for redoing these, in my opinion. I have a rare hemi Bendix booster and needed a rubber bellows for the back end of it and he is the only person who knew about it- and actually had one!

His business is Power Brake Exchange, 4533 SE Division Street. Portland, OR 97206. Phone 503-238-8882. He is very friendly and knowledgable, and will probably know the answer to what is correct for your car. Give him a call.

I would think that the finish should be a gloss black.

In the 70-71 boosters you can see a shine in the black. 1970 the master cylinder was also painted black with the booster on bendix pieces.

Painted my Bendix booster and master cylinder cap semi-gloss black.

But did you call Booster Dewey? He repaints these after he rebuilds them and should know what to paint them for different applications.

Correct, if you are talking about 1970. - With that said the unfinished (Non Buffed) finish of gloss black back in the day was a high sheen black.

Terrific engine compartment!   :)  I see you retained the A/C too.  Is that spinnaker white?

Hey mate, thanks for the compliment.
Close, it's Chrysler Paint code PW7 (Bright White).

The engine compartment is 100 times better now, I will be posting some update photos in the next couple of weeks.

Cheers,

CC Gang,

Thanks for all the info.  Chryco...My cuda is a 71 383 with AC.  Booster Dewey told me it was originally dichromate gold plated.  I have the booster that has the retaining band around the center with the screw. I think he said it was a Midland unit.  I have yet to see another original booster this color...most are black.  Any thoughts...

Thanks again,
Ed

A big block air car- cool!!

I would say do it like Dewey says- he knows what he is talking about. I know there was a lot of variation on these things.

Just my 2¢ as I'm not booster Dewey, but the 70-71 parts catalogue does not list a Midland Ross unit for Barracuda or Challengers in these years, I have seen these boosters on 72-74 cars though.
