anyone built a 416?

i've often thought about building a 416 stroker (stroked 340) and wondered if anyone has done it. how'd it turn out? was it worth the money? how many horses after? etc...

I'm building a 408 right now.  There are a few articles on 360s and strokers in Mopar Muscle and Mopar Action. with dyno tests.   If you can believe these, the motors put out 450-500hp with good heads.

my dad and I took a 340 bored and stroked it came out a wee bit over 421 ci tunnel ramed it put on about 7500 in go-fast goodies and came up with about 750 street able hp at 6500 rpm never ran the motor though we sold it to a guy with a 66 dart

Personally I think the 360 block is the one to stroke out. The parts are alot cheaper for a 360. And prefabbed stroker kits are more readily available. Flatlanderracing.com has a 412 kit for like $3,000 that has everything you need.

Just a heads up on these stroker rebuilds - they are not "bolt together".  I would expect some screwing around to get everything to fit right.  Budget for $1000 in extras.  I had to pay the machine shop to fix the interference between my Eagle crank and Probe pistons.  The bearing clearances you tend to be a bit large too.  My crank has been in and out 5 times and I'm not done yet. If  you allow for it you won't be pissed off when it happens.

What kind of compression to get that kind of horse power? That is impressive to be sure. But everyone has a different opinion on what is street-able, you could get Sox & Martins 69 hemi super stock Cuda to be street-able but not too practical.

Amen brother!!  Nowhere near the Sox & Martin machines, but I kinda know the feeling.  This is awesome fun to drive--sometimes.  While I am streetable, I must be careful about little things that you  don't even consider when cruising the daily driver. Small potholes--(very little suspension travel), Speed bumps--(headers won't clear most of em), and only 12 gallons of fuel on board. 7-8 miles per gallon when being easy on the gas, but she gets REAL thirsty if I start playing with the throttle.  I guess that's why we call em toys, you don't play with them all of the time. That's what makes em so much fun when you can!!  Mopar---"Refuse To Lose"....................Oldschool

Chargin, I'd say check out some older Mopar Muscle tech articles to see what to expect from a 416 build up.  I know they've done several issues with stroker LA's and they give you a very in-depth approach to build a similar engine with close results.

Behind Sox & Martin, D!ck Landy, Don Garlits, etc. etc. etc. etc. LOL, J/K There are great racers associated with all brands, it's just that Chrysler had that infamous Hemi engine, no other manufacturer ever produced an engine that has set more records in so many areas of racing. I use to love to see the mid 50's gaser Chevy's at the drags with the straight axle front ends, jacked up and could rev like nothing else! Some would beat the pants off of the big block competition with ease!

I just decided to drop building the 416 and put the 340 in the corner for later. I just picked up a d440 and think i'm gonna build a 500"
