    Flip top dis-assemble

    I need to take apart my flip top gas cap in order to have it re-chromed and I'm at a stand still. How does it come apart? I have two small holes on it one on the hinge side and one on the side that snaps shut. I thought I would just put in an allen wrench and undo those and it would come apart however there just round holes. What do I do?

    being die cast it is probably staked together & will damage it to take it apart

    So what do you do? Do they re-chrome the whole thing? I would think it would jam up the internal springs and you would not have the black on the interior of the flip top.

    The place that did our chrome job disassembled it for us.  The hinge and the snap and the cap were chromed and the two pins and spring were returned with the three chromed parts. The pins had to be reinserted and set in place using a tool like a slender center punch-- very tricky while you're trying to keep the spring in position.  The pin can only be inserted in one direction as there is a ridge molded inside one side to stop the pin.  As CP mentioned -- be very careful when you're doing this so as not to damage or gouge the metal.  I would suggest that you first see if you can determine which of holes is larger and use a finishing nail and see if you can gently tap it out from the opposite side increasing force as needed.  Take some pictures first (!) of how the snap and hinge and spring arrangements are-  or when you get it back you're gonna have a puzzle in your hands.  :-)
