Oil change to Mobil1
« on: October 27, 2005 - 10:36:53 AM »
A couple days ago, I changed the oil in my dually, from 20w50 Valvoline, to 10w30 Mobil one synthetic (0 degree starts on 20w50 cant be good). This motor starts smoking when idling, and burns a quart of oil every 150 miles or so. Through the valveguide seals.
Anyway, it now has 200 miles on the new change, and hasnt burned more than a 1/4 of a quart. I will keep you guys posted, and you can chose not to believe me if you like, but, I have now seen this with my own eye's.

What is the difference? You would think a thinner oil would go bye bye faster.

weight is not the only consideration oils have different properties & additives , some times synthetic can help an engine seal better other times it works the other way & consumption increases , possibly the cylinder walls retain oil better /the oil stays on the cylinder walls & valve guides  better so when it is cold it seals better Or the carbon around the rings  has been cleaned away allowing the rings to put more pressure on the cylinder walls

I hope I'm not hi-jacking here, but I have a question. I have had my car for 5 years now. Rebuilt 440 and all. It never used oil. Of course, my driving was primarily 10-20 mile trips. So I would go about 1500 miles or so a year. Now this year, I get brave and take it on a 585 mile trip. Suddenly I'm a little more than a quart low. Why? I use Mobil One 10W30 if it matters. I might add that my trip was all highway at about 3000 RPM's.

an engine never gets fully hot on a 20 mile trip possibly the rings have never seated in , do you baby it all the time or work hard a fair bit ?

I pretty much baby it. I have hardly ever driven it at 3000 RPM before.

Hi Mike,
With that steady cruise at 3 grand for 585 miles, I'm sure you did use some oil and that would
be expected. Of that quart you were low, part of that might have been unburned fuel that was
in the oil from short trip driving, and with the long trip the oil got hot enough to evaporate and
burn that off. Moisture is pretty easy to see on the dip stick but fuel mixes in with the oil too
easily to see most of the time. Best way to know would be to start a longer trip with a fresh
oil change and then judge your consumption from that point. Fuel in the oil, especially in the
winter colder climates and short trip driving, with carburated engines used to be very common.
EFI has helped that situation now days.  I've been very pleased with Mobil 1 so far. I love
pulling a valve cover and not seeing all the burnt on varnish you get with regular oil!   Goodluck, Jeff

Jeff,
Thanks for the input. I hadn't considered that.

If you dont have a windage tray, high RPM cruising can cause oil burning too.

I guess I should have been a little more specific. At the halfway point of the trip, it was a quart low, ao I added one. At the end, I expected to add another, but it had hardly burned any off. So I think Jeff might have hit the nail on the head.

Yup.
It is best to ring it out on break in, so that don't happen.
(you were fortunate, I built a 351W for my dad, and eh babied it, and it still burns oil).
I am waiting for him to take a vacation, and I am gonna fix it for him.  (evil little smiley guy goes right here)

Just my 2 cents, I use Mobil 1 in all my cars (5W-30) and none need oil between changes (5000 mile intervals), except for the Challenger which only see's about 1500 between changes. Drove to Carlisle this summer about 400 mile round trip, oil was on full mark when I left home and was on the full mark when I returned home.
