Largest/widest tire for a 14x5.5 rim??????
« on: October 28, 2005 - 10:10:18 PM »
What's the biggest tire that I can mount on my 14 x 5.5 rims on my 74 Cuda?  It currently has 205/75/14's on it, and they fill up the height/width of the wheelwell ok, but they are so dang skinny they look like something off of an old VW.

Not sure on the 5.5.  I didn't see any replies yet so here's my 2 cents.

On my 14 x 6.0 Magnum 500s, you can safely mount 225/70R-14 or 235/60R-14 according to National Tire and Battery.  So on a 5.5 inch rim, I would guess a little smaller.

The best thing is to call a reputable tire place and just ask them over the phone or try tirerack.com.  They should have a book that shows the biggest size you can safely put on that rim.

Your "205's" are good, but I'll bet you can't go bigger than a 215. You just can't do better on a 5.5" wide rim. Sorry.

That's sort of a curse when you have nice stock rims.  If you want something more aggressive looking, you more than likely have to change out the rims but you want to keep them because thier stock factory stuff.

I'm thinking of more aggressive looking tires for the rears of my car.  $$ is an issue too.  I might look around for 15" Magnum 500's used then put something like 275/60s on back and move the 225/70R-14 to the fronts in place of the 215/70R-14.  That's if I can find 'em cheap.

I have a nice set of Mopar 15 X 6 1/2 rallyes I'm going to sell. Keep the stock look, and fit a much bigger tire than what you have now. Your existing centers will work, just need to get trim rings. PM me if you are intrested, I'll make you a deal on them.
