E-body rear bumper/brackets

    E-body rear bumper/brackets

    If I want to move my rear bumpers in closer to body and get rid of those filler pieces, could I use '70-'72 bumper brackets? Would a '74 bumper work with these brackets or would I need '70-'72 bumpers as well?

    You would need the 70-72 bumper brackets (I will look, may have a pair) but the 74 bumper will have different mounting holes.

    Speaking or rear bumpers on a '72, how do you get it off?  I admit I have not looked under there yet but it looks AWFUL tight.  Do I have to remove the rear valance first?  It's probably going to come off eventually for body work, but....

    I had one HECK of a time taking the front bumper off, the brackets would not clear the grill and I ended up cracking it!  Guess I did not follow the secret sequence.  I have a '72 factory body manual but it does not say much.  Actually it "speaks" in broken english.  :o\

    Just got our "new" rear one from the re-chrome shop, looks terrific, better than I have seen from many other suppliers  :o)

    Take the rear valance off for sure!!  Then there are 4 nuts that hold the brackets to the frame.  SO really you will be removing the bumper and brackets all at the same time!

    hmmmm     That is a question that I'm not sure of the answer on the rear.  I know the fronts are definitely different but not sure of the rear.     Someone will know!

    Hope it goes smoother than the front did.  I got the front bumper separated from the brackets thinking they would slide right out by themselves, but noooooo, I still ended up cracking the otherwise PERFECT grill, grrrrrrrrr!  It later broke into two pieces at the "thin" area below the headight!!  Anyone know of a good "glue" for that fix?

    There was someone on here talking about a plastic apoxy that worked really good but I can't recall who . . .    But I think that is the answer.  You might check with alltrim as they do alot of repairing of grills and would probably have the answer to that question!

    Okay, thanks. 

    I'm up to my ears in front end work right now, but I want to be ready to deal with it when after the car is painted it's time to put the trim pieces back on.
    This is a one paycheck at a time project, figure by next Summer it might be running again.  LOL

      I agree. It would be nice if all E-Body parts were created equal, but that would make it too easy for us(banghead smiley).
