Cam Suggestion!

    Hopefully over the winter I'm going to build a 340 with a 71 block that I have recently obtained. I want to save my numbers matching one now in my 71 Cuda and build one for play!! That been said I plan on using the 308 truck heads (Ported) with 2.02's...an Edleblock RPM Air Gap or Weiand Stealth intake and hope to have about 10-10.5 comp ratio when all done. I will be doing everything new such as pistons, rods, rockers..etc The car is a 4-speed with 3:55 gears, power brakes and steering.
    I want to mostly cruise with the engine and maybe go to the track a time or two. I really like the lumpy idle sound and want to car to really scream off the light.
   Now onto my question does anyone have an idea on a possible cam choice to fit my needs......duration....lift....company (From the endless selection).....hyd or should i go with a mechanical (solid) one????? I want one the can still allow me to stop and not badly effect my power brakes.

While there are a multitude of choices--to the point of being downright confusing, I have a suggestion.  A few years back, I had a Dart very similar to the one you are building.  After many name brand "out of the box" cams, I went through a friend of mine at the dragstrip. He turned me on to Lunati cams in Memphis. The engineer collected my info and custom ground a shaft for my application. I don't know if they still do this, but it was by far the best performing and best sounding cam I ever ran in a small block. It was very stout sounding and there was no doubt that it was wanting to run. I can't remember the specs, but it maintained vacuum and was strong right off of the bottom. well with all the hydraulic lifter problems latey due to Standadyne being the only company making them now I really prefer to use solid cams , the Mopar .528 solid is a great  cam to use , Ultradyne / lunati have some killer grinds & Engle makes a good selection of both solid & hyd cams , I use all of the above

  What would be the best duration range to look at and the highest maximum lift that I would want to go and still know that my power brakes will work properly...also...is there much maintainance involved with a solid cam...approximately how often do the valve covers and that have to be removed to readjust the valves. Any ideas as to miles ran / once a year???
  Comp Cams apparently has a new fast lift cam line called the  MM Series it's a solid Cam?? has anyone heard of this type or actually used it in a small block??

lift has no effect on vacuum , assuming the heads will flow more with more lift & are ported properly extra lift is a bonus , duration & overlap determine the vacuum , the 528 is great for this as it has 241* duration @ .050 & only 60 * of overlap
generally you will need to set the valve 3 times in the first 500 miles , afterthat you can go 10,000 miles between adjustments
 most /6 are solid cam & some I am sure have never been adjusted ever this is not nessisarily recommended though

    That mopar cam sounds interesting and worth looking into further......as far as the sound of it goes in a small block will it have that loopy/lumpy sound?? That lumpy idle is exactly what I'm looking for in a cam as I really think that sound's great at a stop light.

the 528 cam has a lope to it but not a huge one , cam that lope are misfiring cylinders which is not the most effiecent for power at lower RPM

   If anyone has a moment go to the site....www. gardnerexhaust.com....in the sound bite's on the left side click on the green 69 1/2 bee near the bottom of the page. If I can get a cam to somehow duplicate that sound in my small block I would certainly be in heaven.
  Any of you have an idea as to what size that cam might be based on the lump???....I assume it's a solid based on the ticking type sound??

Well, I have to say that rump-ity-rump melody sounds a HECK of a lot like the 383 I had 30 years ago, it had a Direct Connection street Hemi hydraulic cam.  It is a sound you just don't forget.

Wanna hear a great sounding Mopar? Take a minute and check out the 1970  HemiCuda. The site is www.musclecargarage.com/challenger.html  If no sound, reload the page a couple of times. After you give it a listen, scroll down to the "HOME" button. Click it and check out this guys collection of Mopars.

id get a aftermarker as stock 340 6 pack cam there a good overall cam! thats what I got in my 360! I havent got to fire it up yet but il let you know how it performs when i do!

Did not listen to the Challenger, those files just take too long for my 28.8k dial-up.  But as I said that Super Bee sounds like it's running the old street Hemi grind.  I am sure those specs are still around.

Both cars (the 69 1/2 Superbee and the Hemi Challenger) on the site's mentioned sound exactly the way that I want my new 340 engine to sound when I'm done getting it built.
Now if only I can find a cam with the right duration...etc..to duplicate that sound???
