Numbers Matching
« on: November 04, 2005 - 11:27:44 AM »
How many of you have a number matching car? and if you do how many have stored the numbers matching engine and transmission and installed a non -number engine and drive train?
I understand that if somehing would happen to the engine and such and it was numbers matching it could lower the pice on the car but what other reaons to change?

My 68 Charger is all numbers matching and stock. My 71 Chally Vert. has a 73 440(internal built to 70 specs) swapped in for the original 383-2. It is mildly built and really flies.

Number matching is the most important on big block cars. And it becomes more important, the more rare and valuable the car is. I.e. 6-pack or hemi car or R/T, etc.

Some people who like to drive the cars actually prefer a nice non-numbers 440 to a stock 383-2.

It seems to me that over time recreations and non-numbers cars have been slowy creeping up in price relative to all numbers cars.

My 70 Satellite is 100% numbers matching but that won't be the case when I'm done with it. When was the last time you saw anyone looking for a 1970 numbers matching 383 Satellite? I'll still have the engine but everything else will be changed anyway so the 383 may end up in something else shortly after the 70's done.

My hard top is #'s matching and I am planning on removing the engine and transplanting it with something this winter . . . just haven't decided what yet.   The convertible is not #'s matching and it is just what I wanted!!

The numbers matching only seems to be worth wild if you have a big block car, or a T/A, or AAR with the original 340 six pack. There are alot of people that swap out a slant six, or 318 for more ponies.

My `72 Barracuda was bought with a 340/727 already installed in place of the 318/904 so it is long gone but who cares. My `69 Barracuda came /6 which I yanked and couldn`t give away so I sent it to the crusher but who cares. My `70 FC7 road runner is a fairly stripped 383 car and although the 727 is missing it did come with the matching numbers block which I plan on using with a mild cam upgrade.Unless you are upping the cubes I don`t see the need for storing the original engine. As long as the motor is biult right the chance of windowing a block is pretty slim if you keep within the rpm limit.

My '73 is an all numbers-matching 318 car with 90,000 miles on everything.  I would like to keep it so I can eventually do it exactly to factory specs when I'm older (have you seen the price for even 318 numbers-matching cars on eBay lately?!!!!), but for now I'll be installing an era correct '73 340 block with a steel crank and it'll be built.

My T/A is numbers matching, but I did not know that until after I had owned it for seven years. I am not planning on using the original engine or four speed, I want to build an aluminum head 340 for it with one of Passon Performances new aluminum case 4-speeds with their new overdrive setup. I want something I do not have to worry about breaking, I am planning on driving it hard once it is done. :-)

The original engine and trans will get a cosmetic restoration and will be on display in my garage. Value is not a concern to me, it will never be for sale as long as I am alive.

My 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T is all numbers matching.
Not 100% correct (different color/interior) but the gold bars are still there.

Does it make a difference to me, yip, a little always good knowing you have what Chrysler made from the start.
However, I also want a non-numbers car to toy around with, Lucy is a comfy 400hp (est) and I may tickle her up to $20-30hp later but I want to go real wild, somewhere in the 500hp mark will be fantastic, but that's for a clone car, not this numbers car.

This is a subject that I was going to start but did not do it.  I have had numbers matching cars and others that were not.  I was wondering just how many might have made it.  Does anyone remember the warranty on engines and trans in 1970 through 1974?  I know of a lot of guys who ran theirs hard and had engine problems and got them replaced.

Just wondering how some of the most powerful engines that have ever been made actually made it till now.

My '72 Rallye is a #s matching 340.  About 106K miles.  The engine has never been taken apart and it still runs smooth and no smoke out the tailpipe.

It's not so much a $ thing but like NZ it's neat that the car still has the engine it came with from the factory.

It's kind of a curse and a blessing.  I feel less inclined to pull the engine and put in something with more power since it's original.  If I had gotten the car with non original color paint, enigine, and custom wheels, it might give me the oppurtunity to have more fun with it as far as changing this and that.  Or would I change it back to stock?  Who knows...

Lots of good insight guys. My plan is to rebuild my numbers engine and as it will be more of a cruiser with an occasional heavy foot on the gas. My 383 should have a long life after the rebuild.

I also agree with NZ. Theres something cool about knowing that my car is what it was the day it rolled off the line.

About every car I've ever owned has been a matching numbers car. Otherwise I move on. I have always just rebuilt and re-installed it back in. I'm not a racer ,, or beat on it hard, never did. so I never had a reason the have a spare drivetrain. I like to think my next one will be more of a playtoy and not the original carb, date code, oem type. But chances are I will not be happy with any less.

My '72 Cuda is all number matching with 40,072 miles on her. Unfortunately I'm missing the fender tags though, as the last owner (original owner) took it off for some reason and lost it. I do have a build sheet in excellent condition however so I can verify the options my car has, which are not very many (although it does have the relatively rare V21 blackout hood treatment).

Both mine are 100% numbers70 barracuda GC and 73 chally rally 340 4 speed, but when they are both done being restored will get fresh already built 69 340 and 68 383 built to my specs, that way i can have fun with them and not worry about scattering a numbers matching motor. The orginals are tucked away in a corner of my shop
