Made in China?!
« on: November 07, 2005 - 12:36:31 PM »
A couple weeks ago I bit on an eBay auction for a pair of reproduction 1971 turn signal housings.   I am not concerned with having original parts on my car, but more concerned with having working components that look good and don't change the original look of the car.  Anyway, I got them in last Saturday and am very pleased with them.  They look great I was super surprised to see that they came straight from the manufacturer in CHINA?!
I am not upset really because they are the only repros I know of and they look very good.  But why does it seem like a lot of new parts are comming from China?  It seems wrong to start putting these parts on an American car!  ....and why are they making them over there?

My mopar performance black krinkle hemi valve covers were made in taiwan.
For $650.00 I would have expected them to be made here in the U.S.
M P probably has about $50 invested in them.

Tooling cost overseas is less than 1/4 of the cost of doing the tooling here. Wages are like 1/100 the cost. Do the math. lol

I work in precision sheet metal and we are losing work to China b/c of thier wages,25 cents to start and 50 cents after training. They take people from poor farming areas and house and feed them right at the factory and can still make parts for pennies on the dollar compared to us,we just can`t compete with that.Same thing happened with Mexico a few years back but eventually they will catch up some when they are forced to deal with working conditions, safety and enviromental concerns.

I don't mind Tiawan as much since they are a democratic society and annoy the p!ss out of the chinese.  I'm just tring to figure out that the U.S. is doing more to support communism (china) by buying everything from there, then was spent on destroying the soviet union.  I think it's funny that mexico at one time (or still does) had a ban on imports from china.  They try to stop anything and everything coming from china.  When will the west wake up and figure that out?

Ah, don't you just love the global exchange rates in action....I can say as of now everything I've bought for my car has been Canadian or American made, but I'm sure when I get into the reproduction parts they'll be from Taiwan and China.

On the topic of made-overseas-parts:

I heard that Edelbrock camshafts are made overseas, is this true?

When I bought my Edelbrock manifold I was given the choice of the Chinese knock-off for $100 less or the Eddy.  I went for the Eddy because they try to keep manufacturing in the USA (and I'm Canadian).

There is a guy on Ebay who sells repro parts made in China - mostly E body stuff such as shift rods, etc.

If something is made in the USA I usually buy it, a good % of parts or product made in the US is great.

If not I usually my New Zealand made which is well respected with it's products (enginuity) Fisher & Paykel kitchen appliances, the worlds first amphibian car, fruit, beef, wine, beer, cloths (mountain wear) extreme sports products etc....

I'd also buy from Australia or England.
