Looking for 71 'Cuda to purchase
« on: November 08, 2005 - 05:07:21 PM »
New to the forum, so hello to everyone.

Among many other hotrods over the years, I owned a '71 340 'Cuda for about 6 years. Sold it about 15 years ago, and have regretted it ever since. Every time I see a black 71, I cringe and wish I had it back. So, I'm in the process of looking into buying another one. Hardtop 4 spd. only, no 6's or Barracudas. Not looking for a show car, not looking for a rust heap. Something nice that I can put all my spare time and  money into, and have bouts of insomnia over my next mods.

Any ideas where I can look? Hemmings of course has only mega-dollar restorations. Thanks for the input.

You are asking for the most desireable E-Body. You will pay $$$ even for a rust bucket. Those cars bring top dollar on E-Bay too. There is always Mopar Collectors guide, but again, I would think you would be looking at big money cars. I don't mean to discourage you, but many of us have found happiness with other E-Bodies. I have a 70 Challenger that drives me to fits more often than I care to share, but it is an eye catcher, and it is fun to drive. Welcome aboard here. You will meet some great people if you stick around.

I appreciate the comments so far.

It's funny to hear that the 71 is the "most desirable E-body". When I owned my car in the mid-80's to early 90's, it was the stepchild of the E-bodies. Everyone wanted a '70, and tended to look down their noses at '71's with comments about the headlights, the "ugly" grill, etc. Nice to know it has grown in popularity, but I guess that's not going to help me in my purchase!

Ok, so one more question - what kind of ballpark figure are we talking about for a driver in decent condition? $30K? $20k? Best place to look?

Welcome!

I would say that depending on what your definition is of a decent driver is that you are on target with a $20,000 to $30,000 range.  A couple of years ago, I ran across a '71 that was very nice for about $24,000.  At that time, I didn't have that kind of money sitting around, so I opted to build my dream from one that need some serious help.

I would say 20-30K for a decent driver is probably the going rate now. You are totally correct about this car being scoffed at in the past for it's grill and 4 headlights. My how times have changed(LOL).

Thanks Sal. Good website - but it's depressing to see a range from $54k to $750k. Somebody please kill me for selling mine in '91 for $5k with a spun main bearing.
