440 6pak or hemi
« on: November 13, 2005 - 02:06:17 PM »
This question may have been beaten to death previously, but I am a new mopar owner - 70 TA Clone Convertible - has 340 6pak, but pretty stock.  Would love to keep car in its nearly perfect clone status except have always wanted the big block.

How much power can I build out of the 340 6pak or should I go with 440-6 or the 426 hemi - any thoughts on new hemi would be appreciated

Thanx

Well, here are my opinions...

340 Six Pak - very good all-around engine, good performance, stock appearance, lighter for better handling of the car

440 Six Pack - excellent engine, better choice for straight line performance, some "Wow" factor added to car

426 Hemi - EXCELLENT engine, great peformance, big "WOW" factor, but some tuning experience needed to make it run to its potential (if you go with a Hemi crate motor, I would recommend the 472 CID variant from Mopar Performance)

392 "New" Hemi - so far it sounds like a great motor for performance, not sure of the pricing yet or what other expenses may be required to adapt it to the older Mopars (sounds like DCX is aiming it at this market, so may not be a big issue)

Since it sounds like you want a "big" motor (and I assume the "Wow" factor), I would recommend the 472 Hemi... If you want a great all-around performer with a "Wow" factor included, the new 510 HP 392 Hemi being released soon by M-P might be the best way to go...  On the other hand if you have significant budget constraints, the 440 Six Pack route would be a lot easier on your wallet...

Just my opinions...  a bit biased to Hemis... ;)

Cudabuyer--
You've got the pecking order for your options all lined up.

Fast--340-6 pak
More Fast--440-6 pak
Fastest--Big ole Hemi

Another consideration is $:

Fast--$$
More Fast--$$$$
Fastest--$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

It's been said a million and one times---"Speed costs money--How fast do you want to go?"

To me, there are no losers in that group. Figure out what's important to you and go for it.  Remember resale value. One day you might tire of your toy. Which  one will bring the biggest return in the end?........................Oldschool

You should definitely replace it as your Challenger is not a clone no T/A rag tops were made.
If I were you and had the money I would build a 440-SixPak.

HEMIS are expensive and you can get more for your bang from a 440.
Also, a stock 440-SixPak on the street would beat a HEMI up to the legal limit.

Unless your wanting a 1/4 mile car or drive well over speeds of the legal limit I'd go for the 440-SixPak, HUGELY underrated engine.
The HEMI however does have a huge "WOW" factor, is that enough for you though?

I have had both the 340 6 pack and the 440 6 pack.  I like both.  The 440 had more power and really had the power that could get you into trouble on the street.  I got caught several times in the 440 6 pack cuda I had when in College.  I remember that it was the only car I ever drove that could smoke both tires when I kicked it down into passing gear and go side ways.  What a ride.  Wish I still had it.

What speeds were these? Not highway speeds eh? Just low down say, 30mph speed?

Thanks,

Thanx for all the recommendations, many I have already pondered.  I will obviously research the $$$$$$$$$ factor of the 426, I do like the 472 but a lot of mopar afficinados like the 426.  The 392 is also a consideration.  More to come later.  I do realize that no 70 TA convertibles were built but almost all of the other features of the car are there pretty damn close except for the rag.

Do the 440 and save some money. Here's my 446 with ported aluminum heads that makes more power than the 472 crate hemi and cost 6.5k to build. Runs on 93 unleaded and made 535hp/540tq. Nothing fancy, steel crank, reworked stock rods and speedpro 6-pack pistons.

As already stated, bang for the buck is the 440, you won't turn as many heads at the local shows but you will be showing them your taillights as you blow past them! Seriously, I'm into my 500 stroker much less than the MP 426 hemi, much much less than the 472 and pushing 560 hp and 590 fpt. plus it's also new from the pan to the air cleaner lid. I love the hemi and if I had the money to build one like this stroker, that's exactly what I'd have right now but for the time being, the stroked 440 will do just fine. Someday I'll have one, just hope it's before I am pushing up daisies. Also already stated, no losers in this batch, just depends on what you want to spend. Still wish someone would share their lotto winnings with me, can't figure it out, there is more than enough to go around!

Glen,
My advice is to get real chummy with all the old folks that live by you. Aren't they the ones that win millions in the lottery, or have Publisher's Clearing House hand them a 10 million dollar check??? LOL, I have never seen a young person win yet. It's fixed!!!
