I would prefer the black cuda concept. I also agree that a two door would sell just fine. If you are going to go retro and try to bring back the feel and desire for these cars, you have to stick with the original formula. Thats why the mustang sells. Look at the dismal numbers GM is drawing with their so called GTO.

    ...   . . . . . . . .  .

POSALUTLY NOT!!!!   look how pissed I'd be if I had a 69 Charger   ( I'd have to add 2 more doors )

So, you'd rather they just basically remade the 69 Charger, then?  How foreward looking of you.

No.  It's not.  Most of my friends are Mustang fans.  They could care less if it looked retro or not.  They like the way it looks, but, even if it looked like a brick with 4 wheels, they would still want one.  BECAUSE IT'S A MUSTANG.  The name is what sells that car, alot more than the performance did.  For example, take from 99-02.  The T/A and the Z-28, the Mustangs direct competitors, outperformed the Mustang in every category, except one.  Sales.  The Mustang outsold both the F bodies COMBINED.  What does that say about the Stang?

Yes but what your saying is that the mustang name has a bigger fanbase that every old mopar put together, so why re they reusing the charger name if it has such a small fanbase?

My whole post went right over your head, didn't it?

The Charger fanbase is large, but, compared to the Mustang's, it might as well be a local boy scout troop.  The Mustang is one of only a VERY few cars that have seen continuos production for close to 40 years.  I defy you to name 5 other cars who have seen continuos production that long.  I only know of one other.  In fact, I know people who don't even know what a Muscle car is, let alone able to identify a Charger, who love the Mustang.  Of course, those people are all in their teens or early 20s.  For the Baby boomers, they remember the Charger pretty well.  They grew up with the original ones.  Now, they have families, kids, and grandkids.  Most of them don't want a small, cramped 2 door car that's hard to get in and out of.  They want a nice, big, easy to drive, easy to use sedan.  Hence, the new Charger.  Name recognition to get people to the dealerships, and just the right style of car to sell.  It was a smart move on DCXs part, whether you like it or not.

Why not just name it the magnum sedan, that has a bigger fanbase (not sure if yo could call it fan) than the charger?

Yes, because a car named Magnum Sedan would get ALOT of people to the showroom floors, and gain alot of publicity, wouldn't it?  In fact, there are more sites dedicated to the Magnum than there are dedicated to Chargers.  And, if you believe that, I got some oceanfront property in Arizona I can sell you for dirt cheap.  :eyeroll:  The Charger has the biggest fanbase of ANY Mopar, including the E bodies.  Also, the name Magnum Sedan REALLY sounds like it fits a hi performance car, doesn't it?  Think logically, NOT emotionally.

Why not just call it the magnum, It has a good reputation, unlike the charger, which as most people think
Quote
In the chargers heyday it was heavier and slower than its competitor, the ford mustang.

Once again, the Charger didn't compete with the Mustang.  It competed with the Chevelle, and the Torino.  It was a midsize Muscle car.  The Mustang was a small Pony car.  Dodge had no TRUE competition to the Mustang untill the Challenger.

And, frankly, saying that the Magnum has a better reputation than the Dodge Charger is WAAAAAAYYYY out there.  I just proved why calling it a Charger is better than calling it a Magnum Sedan, in my previous post.  Read it, and use logic, and you will understand.  And, please, stop trying to use stuff like "The Magnum has a better reputation than the Charger".  Because, we BOTH know that couldn't be further from the truth.

Imagine you have just turned 23, you drive a 1999 nissan skyline gtr but you have decided to sell it and start a family.
Your knowledge of classic mopars goes anout as far as seeing a couple in movies and reading and reading a little about them in newspapers and a little on tv, which basically say (as I quoted above) the charger was slow, heavy and couldnt compete with the mustng (Yes, I know it was never ment to compete with the mustang, Im not stupid) but you have also heard about the magnum from ads on tv etc.

Im not sure if this makes sence, or seems a little unfinished, but Im not going to reply to this thread as arguing is getting us nowhere.I want you to nothing I have said about here is personal.)

I agree with Ghost that the Mustang is one of the most (or maybe even the most) popular cars of any era. The sales show it. But I do have to say one thing. The name is not always the most important thing. The styling is just as important. Take a look at the attached link for more details on the mustang. As of July, Ford had an increase in sales of more than 47% on the Mustang from the previous year. The was not due to the name, it was due to the styling (retro) and performance. They also mention that the " 74 Mustang II" was the biggest decrease. So it's not always the name....   With Chrysler, the 300's new styling was one of their biggest increases in sales. So it looks like they are banking on using that style with the Charger's name (combination of both) and bumping the performance to get that "other" niche in the market.....   For Ford retro worked, Chrysler taking a different approach....  We shall see what happens.....

also on the name versus style you hav to think fo the two little sport convertbles that gm is putting out, i know a ton of people that would never own a saturn and then BLAM the sky came along and had all of them thinking.  same goes for the solstice.  i do realize that is whole different kind of car im just talking about the name against the style.  i hate all gm products, i mean all.  but d**n i might have to get a sky just because they are so d**n nice looking.

and if you want to make this relivant to the conversation.  i hate stangs, but almost bought one when the '05s came out cause they were pretty.  until i sat in one and interier was crap,

i love chargers, but when i saw what they made that thing look like i said BLAH and never even looked at the inside, im guessing its identical to the magnum/300

all im saying is you need both, good looks and a good name.  personally i think looks are more important.
i mean imagine if the charger came out and looked like that early concept, that thing was pure sex

i agree with you ghost expect for one little thing!! the early darts and barracudas were very competive to the mustangs (67-69) they where both small cars with big engines in fact the mustang never had a big block until 681/2 which was the 428 cobra jet mustang! the 383 darts and barracudas would eat a mustang alive in 67 and 68 then in the middle of hte year ford made the 68 1/2 mustang and put a mamoth 428 under the hood and started tearing up the street and chysler repleyed with the 440 barracuda which was also faster!! then in 70 the challnger and cuda was the mustangs compatision! but we had stuff the compete with ford before 70! from 62-70 mopar owned the drag stripes everywhere!! what we lacked was nascar vehicals! ford put millions of dollars in nascar racing and chrysler and chevy got blown away! then in 70 ford got out of nascar and started putting there racing money toward the economy!! in from 64-69 chysler had a good nascar run vs ford but ford was just to much!! but they couldnt touch us on the strip!!

I said DODGE never  had a direct competitor.  Plymouth did.  I own one.  But, the Dart was more of a Nova competitor, than a Pony car.  A Muscle car Junior.
