Imagine you have just turned 23, you drive a 1999 nissan skyline gtr but you have decided to sell it and start a family.
Your knowledge of classic mopars goes anout as far as seeing a couple in movies and reading and reading a little about them in newspapers and a little on tv, which basically say (as I quoted above) the charger was slow, heavy and couldnt compete with the mustng (Yes, I know it was never ment to compete with the mustang, Im not stupid) but you have also heard about the magnum from ads on tv etc.

Im not sure if this makes sence, or seems a little unfinished, but Im not going to reply to this thread as arguing is getting us nowhere.I want you to nothing I have said about here is personal.)

First of all, the Skyline is not sold in the US, which, as far as I know, is the ONLY market the Charger will be sold for.  And, even if it was, I don't know of many 23 year olds who could afford one.

2ndly, I don't remember ANY movie that showed the Charger to be slow and heavy.  In Bullitt, the Charger is shown several times pulling away from the Mustang.  In TFTF, the Charger only loses the race due to an engine problem, and running into the truck.  In the Dukes of Hazzard, the Charger is portrayed as a badass, unbeatable Muscle car.  I could go on and on.  Again, I repeat, the Charger was NEVER portrayed as a slow, heavy, uncompetitive car.

3rd, I've seen more adds for the new Charger than I have for the Magnum.  Plus, even people who don't know much about Chargers know them from movies and TV shows, like DOH, and TFTF.  Your points do not have a leg to stand on, andrew.

Are you talking the remake of Vanishing Point, the one the sheriff/patrolman drove, "Beast"?

I read an article on the making of Bullit a while ago.  I remember that they said the Mustang had a hard time keeping up with the 383 powered Charger.

440 R/T, and you would be correct.  The driver of the Charger had to hold back, in order for the Mustang to keep up.

Spot on. Was revelled later that the Mustang also needed suspension and shock rebuilds to the underside from the big jumps.
The Charger made the filming complete and needed no modifications or any replacement parts.

As for the Charger I have always thought of them as being too big, Muscle car of course, no pony but they are huge.
They aren't slow but a stock 383 or 440 will get dealt to by most of today's modern cars from 0-60mph.

Having said that, 2 tonnes isn't a small amount by any means and to do a 1/4 in 13 seconds and hit 60mph in the mid 6 second range is quite an achievement. Also, people forget that in the real world there is such a thing as a rolling start......

Actually, I don't have the #s off hand but a '69 Charger and the 2006 Charger, I've heard, don't weigh all that much different.  I think the 2006 is close to 2 tons also.

Makes you kinda wonder how they get that car to do 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds with a 5.7L, 340 horse, while a '69 Charger 500 with a 426 Hemi, 425 horse, does 0-60mph in 5.7 seconds.  Only 0.2 seconds off, according to Muscle Car Magazine.  The miracle of modern technology.  Of course those skinny little bias ply tires didn't help.

See some cool stats at this link for different types of muscle cars:

This link is pretty good too. You can see some of the same cars compared on the list tested by different magazines getting slightly different results...

Nice list!  Even last place on the list is respectable!

Sorry, I don`t mean to hijack this thread but didn`t notice the -68 S/S Barracuda or Dart. Maybe the list is only for street legal musclecars?

Maybe.  I don't see any S/S type cars on the list.  How many '68 S/S Barracudas/darts were made?  Like the Ford Thunderbolt, they made only about 50, so they are limited production.  Maybe this list is for full production cars, not limited production cars.

I did notice the Camaro with 427 ZL1 engine, but I don`t know if that was an S/S car. Couldn`t have been many made of those.
About the Charger, wonder how it came that the production car came to be so different compared to the concept car.
I mean Dodge Viper didn`t came look so different as a production car/ concept car.

It came different because there has been a lot of upper management changes at DCX.

Het Swede,
I don't mean to just jump in here, but I think it depends on which list you look at. Take a second and check out this site. I think you will like it better---I know I do!........www.autofacts.ca/classics/fast.htm    .......Oldschool
