Has anyone noticed this with there new vinyl top?
« on: November 15, 2005 - 09:01:31 PM »
Hey everyone,
I just got done installing a new top from legindary, and i have noticed that they have screwed up the stiching. Heres a few pictures, I have went on line and looked at some other challenger and ther the same way, Im not talking about the zig zag being the same, the curve. The zig zag im sure is just this one. Tell me what you think. Im tempted to send the old top in and tell them to change there templet.

Dang, I didn't realize the stitching was off that much with the curvature!  Though I don't think it looks too horribly bad, it's your call as to what plan of action you should take with the situation.  I wonder if Year One's tops are from the same supplier as Legendary's...

As for the paint, I can't believe someone would not have removed the weatherstripping prior to painting.  It's just a mere extra paint to make it look that much better when it's all assembled again.  Oh well, at least you're doing it the proper way this time around.

I think i will send them some pictures, And send them my old one for a new templet, its not that big of a deal but if i was doing this car to a concorse resto i would be pissed. And i do believe that they all come from the same company, there just sold thru different people.
Yes i did install the top but with the help of two other guys, i couldnt find a steamer to rent so i just parked it under the heater and turned it up all the way! Boy it was hot, but it made it easlyer to remove the bubbles....
What we did was preped the top real good cleaned it with some silicone remover, You wanna mark the center of the roof on the front and rear and on the vinyl top.  then sprayed some 3m  spray trim adhesive to the top of the car, then sprayed some on the vinyl top... let them sit for about 5 mins....dont spray to much on it because it will ball up and you will have lumps under it...have atleast 3 guys...set it down front first line it up.then the back... clap the front center line down with a vise grips... then work from the center line back and out removing any air bubbles as the other two guys pull on the rear sail panels....when you get to the back...line up under the rear window pull that tight from the center working out...dont worry about the sail panels so much there will be some bubbles...just get around the window right....then pull the sail panels down and forward... as someone works the bubbles out....clamp the top down around the windows and by the drip rail let it setup a day then trim it. I hope this help you! If not i can send some pictures of the next one i do. It will be around christmas...on another 70 challenger...
im not sure how the dart top it but it not to bad...you just need to take your time and do it right. you cant rush this one. Make sure you have some help at least to pull on it. The hardeest part is around the rear window. because you need the lower tight else you will have a buldge because there is to much vinyl under it. and the only way to get it out is to cut it!

pics 1&2 are showing the center marks on the roof
pics 3 is the center of the vinyl top
4 is of the car masked off so you dont get the spray adhesive on it
5 is of the car after letting it sit

All you can do is try it..."dont let fear hold you back" The most that will happen is you will have to remove it and buy a new top. still cheeper then taking it some were...Im not sure i would try it with gator grain! LOL
