Mig Welder
« on: November 16, 2005 - 11:56:02 PM »
There seems to be a lot of ‘off-topic’ threads here and I don’t know a better forum to post this question in so…

I was thinking of buying a Mig welder but I do not know what to look for… I see them ranging from 300$-2k+. I do not know what to look for what relates to my application, garage work: welding sub-frame connecters, body repair, exhaust patches, minor custom things, etc… Any advice / tips? I am also interested in which brand welders have good reps and which have bad ones.
Thanks

A small 110v welder is good up to 1/4" thick and should be all you need.I am looking at replacing my 15+ yr old one with either a Hobart,Linclon or Miller. All of those are top name brands with good reps and have models around $500.

stay away from the cheap italian & chinese ones ,
I agree with torred, Miller , Lincoln or Hobart in that order all are easy to get replacement parts for & do a decent job
you can get them in 110v or 220v , the 220 v is better if you have a plug for it

First time the trigger switch went out, shorted, and did some kind of damage to the wire drive motor. Second time, it just quit working, I took it in, and they said it would be 150$ to fix it (something in the amp switch). I picked up the SP-175, they gave me 200 trade on the Handler, and away I went. Still works great, about 4 years later.
I didn't like the way the Hobart welded either. It had a slow start for the wire drive, which was a pain for stitching, and the heat switch was not sensitive enough either.

I think Snap on welders are actually build by Lincoln. I remember the Snap on guy telling me that a while back.

I've got a Lincoln Mig welder, it's been good. I have never had a major problem with it, and never a repair. I've had it now for about 8 years.
