A couple of fender tag questions......
« on: November 18, 2005 - 12:42:06 PM »
I own a 70 cuda 383 4spd.. I just have a few questions about the fender tag info..

What are Body Belt Moldings ? (M31)
Deck Lid Molding Treatments ? (M88)

Also it is coded for dual exhuast with Bright Exhaust Tips (N42), the car currenty has the valance without the cutouts. I have seen the exhaust tips (chrome) on Cudas with the cutouts but not on ones without. I don't know if the valance was the orignal or not, I don't even know how to check. I will be buying an exhaust system sometime this winter and I want to get it as close to coded as possible. I can post a few pics but they are from a cell phone camera, I changed them to black & white because it is a liitle clearer...

Thanks in advance.....

M31 Belt moldings are the chrome trim on the top of the doors and on the rear quarters at the rear windows...i think i see them on your car in the pics.

M88 is the chrome trim strips along the rear trunk lip, and at the back of each quarter.

If a 70-74 cuda/barracuda calls for N42 (bright exhaust tips), then it has the pass-thru valance with the chrome tips. No e-bodies came with chrome tipped turned down exhaust from the factory.

Thanks for the quick response. Is the M88 the chrome that goes on the edges of the tail panel?

no, M88 is the chrome that goes on the lip of the trunk lid, and both rear edges of the rear quarters...it's an optional trim package. I think what you are thinking about is what i call the pin chrome trim that all Cuda's have, that outlines the taillite panel.

Here is a pic of it (M88) on my old 74 Cuda

Thanks for the pic of the M88 explanation. I have owned my car since 1982 and I am avid fan of mopars, especially cudas...  I have never seen, or noticed, that molding on a 70 cuda. Mine never had it (since I owned it), although it is coded for it.....

Thanks again....

Reading this thread got me to go check my tag also. My 70 also is coded for M33 and M88. Got the M33 chrome trim near the windows, but there is no strip on the deck lid. How did it attach? Should there be holes or other telltale signs? Can somebody put a picture of the rear of a 70 with this option? Thanks. Here's what mine looks like. Just the thin strip that surrounds the tail panel, nothing on the edge of the deck lid.

M88 is the oval band the wraps around the tail lamp area.

Barry: So on a 70, the M88 does NOT mean anything on the decklid, and the strip you see in my picture IS the option? This may solve cjm's problem also if he has the chrome strip like I do, but not on the decklid/back edge on quarter panel like the 74 in the picture.

cooda,
Yes, that is correct for 1970. I am not real familiar with the 1974 models, but some codes did have different meanings on later cars.

Barry is right, and so am i...LOL....the code M88 in 70 and 71 is for the "pin" chrome, and in 72-74 is for the chrome shown on the pic of my 74. I had the 72-4 book out when i looked it up, and like Barry says, diff years use the same code for different options.

Now that that is cleared up, and we get to see shots of the backs of all these cars....

the 74 Cudas were not the desirable muscle cars that the 70-71's were, but those round tail lights made the best looking Cuda from the back of all of them (IMO).

You should have seen the look on my face the first time I saw a 1979 tag with A53 on it. Man oh man was I confused. ;-)
